SHAKA ZULU: A Legendary Zulu King

SHAKA ZULU (1986) is a mini series worth a watch. While I can't really attest much to its historical accuracy, as for the series itself, as well as the acting, it was all very excellent. It tells the supposedly historical and yet legendary account of the King and Warrior Shaka, of the Zulu people. Shaka, played by Henry Cele, was excellently portrayed-- brilliant and powerful, brave and fierce, unpredictable and cunning--a Machevellian strategist and ruler. The story takes place from Lt. Francis Farewell's (Edward Fox) perspective, who was also great in his role. The entire cast was great in this series. The clashing and merging of two cultures was very intriguing to see, as well as the epic romance between Shaka and Nandi.

Overall, this was a very interesting watch, that I first viewed some many years ago, but still holds up today. It is a brilliant mini series, that shines at least a dim light on that era, and in that region. There are far too few shows featuring African tribes and cultures here in the west, so it was great to at least see one, even if it was from the 80's and possibly inaccurate. It was much better than expected that was for certain. I wish more producers dared to create period dramas based in other countries located on continents like African and India, lesser seen and vastly under represented parts of the world. A great watch!
