On a very basic conceptual level, it's an interesting experiment to have two people write and direct a romance film who clearly aren't in love with either the genre or the narrative of either. It creates the foundation for completely new sides to be illuminated by a subject that can be difficult to articulate on film, where reality is precisely simplified.
