Drive, He Said (I) (1971)
6/10
Jack Nicholson's directorial debut
18 February 2023
Hector Bloom (William Tepper) is a college basketball star player. Olive (Karen Black) is his girlfriend. Bullion (Bruce Dern) is his coach. His best friend Gabriel (Michael Margotta) leads protests against the war as the draft threatens.

It's Jack Nicholson's directorial debut. It's not his greatest skill. It's interesting to see Terrence Malick as an uncredited co-writer. The script is meandering. The directions are fine but messy. Its main issue is its lackluster lead with his sleepy eyes. He struggles to hold the center of the film. His director isn't helping. There are some interesting indie ideas as the envelope gets pushed. I certainly give it points as an anti-war film in the middle of the war.
