Story of a spy in India of the 70s
3 February 2023
The plot is about a young Indian spy ( Sidharth Malhotra) positioned in Pakistan and who masquerades as a tailor. Reminded me of the title of an old movie " Tinker tailor soldier spy" since the hero here is a tailor and a spy also. ( Only title, not plot). If you agree that a spy can be emotional, can fall in love, get married and continue spying in that country then this movie is for you. The movie has a long runtime and maybe the long winded story required it. It is to the credit of the screen writer and the director that the story moves smoothly though there may be technical inaccuracies because it is based on real events. To me the depiction of events during the period 1970s like the 71 war, Pokharan nuclear blast, Prime Minister Bhutto's tirade, takeover of Pakistan government by General Zia, PM Indira Gandhi's emergency etc are fairly well covered. How the spy manages to locate the clandestine nuclear facility in Pakistan overcoming obstacles forms the plot. He has earlier got married to a blind Pakistan girl ( Rashmika Mandanna) which gives an emotional touch.

Director Shantanu Bagchi has made an interesting movie which keeps the audience engaged with enough of sentiment and dramatic scenes. One should sit back and watch the movie without asking questions. Some passable acting comes from Siddharth Malhotra, Rashmika Mandana, Kumud Mishra and Sharib Hashmi. The depiction of the famous personalities from history is done fairly well except maybe General Zia where the actor overacts. Use of stock shots from history is appropriate.
