We went in openminded, expecting a lovely story, but pretty soon we encountered un-subtle moments that I couldn't place.
Like having sex in between floodsurvivors. I guess that was supposed to be "quirky" or something. We watched it with people that were alive in those times and the idea of having such casual sex in an attic while outside the people are dying, was a bit like people having a shag under the Twintower-ruins before they collapse. It just rubbed the wrong way, it felt unnatural, as if the first bare ass wasn't enough and there was dire need for a sex-scene.
The mindset of the "Dutch" guy was not typically Dutch at all (the 'punishment' of the malicious character made me a bit nauseous... as if we have agressive guys like that here) and we kept on sighing and being disappointed throughout the whole thing. If I had to describe it in one word, it would be cringy.
I did not enjoy this movie and as a Dutch woman, I did not feel that they captured any Dutch atmosphere or mindset. There was no depth to the movie (for me) and I wish I hadn't seen it.
