I can tell you how these jokes are written. You take something that majority is angry about and just make them feel good about it. It doesn't have to be funny. Just reaffirm their beliefs and anger and they will laugh with a sense of relief. They will feel vindicated and part of the "smart" majority of "sensible" people. He always has to remain that good boy everyone loves, or most of the people. His audience is smart and educated and annoyed by some other, very stupid people, that are outside of this safe space of wisdom. You really need to be a certain mindset to be able to laugh at these jokes.
