I'm totally ok with sappy or feel-good movies, especially around the holidays. This was not acceptable even in that role.
Every character is either incompetent, malicious, or both. The harmful part is that this was treated as if it should be endearing. That both parents who were failing to take care of even basic things were redeemed by their occasional nice words. Neighbors that were aggressively competitive about their decorations. Townsfolk that were only friendly when they saw they had been painted into a mural.
I had no sympathy for any of the characters, nor could I identify with any of them, because there was too much dysfunction blended together for anyone to stand out. Add slow pacing and bad dialog, and you've got the worst thing I saw all year.
