A Sure Thing - Two Thumbs Up

To say that this series has been an outstanding success is almost an understatement. The producers and scriptwriters have overachieved in almost every aspect and most importantly the narrative and plot were beautifully sewn up in the finale. So much so, that one has to wonder how long the series can contain such fantastic screenplay? With Burton back to his best at the helm of the project I was left moved and in a constant state of suspense as the episodes flew by.

The sheer genius of the drama allows for viewers of practically any generation to enjoy and identify with Wednesday; whilst our sombre protagonist is routinely glum and pessimistic, her lines sparkle with such self-affirming wit and sarcastic intelligence - together with those bangs and wide-eyed stare - that you can't but help be totally blown away by Ortega's onscreen presence.

The denoument of season one's arc was so well pieced together that they had to tag on a last scene to open up a new pandora's box for a show which is already firing on all cylinders with a set so cleverly toned; the colour/noir clash has never been juxtaposed so splendidly onscreen -although it's fair to say the Director has had plenty of practice.

In summary, this season and shows like Andor really seem to highlight a move away from the 'dumbing down' Hollywood agenda of the online streaming subscription base. They are acknowledging and reflecting a wide audience which can embrace a character who is a quirky critical thinker with advanced and adult vocabularic skills, totally unrelient on smart tech and only too aware of the pitfalls of the celebrity society that has infiltrated the public ego. A final mention should go to perhaps the most unheralded hero of the show; for a walking hand to establish such cameraderie and charisma is truly a joy to behold; a sure Thing indeed - two thumbs up!!
