When Men Were Men

John Wayne plays The Man, of course. Maureen O'Hara plays the voluptuous redhead. They've never been my favorite on-screen duo, and this movie won't make them them so.

As for the story, I dunno, it's a western. I think it's supposed to be a comedy. Judging by all the yelling and the complete lack of actual jokes, I'd say it's a screwball comedy.

Enjoyed the mudfight, though it went on too long.

Stefanie Powers should have been a superstar after this movie. She's magnificent.

Patrick Wayne. He was good looking, charming and he gets to spank Powers. Guy was on top of the world.

Jerry Van Dyke nearly steals the movie with his clowning. Best part is when he calls The Duke a ''reactionary," and then explains that's what the young generation (i.e., draft dodgers, college students, hippies and assorted leftist traitors) call the older generation (i.e., the people who built America and fought in two world wars).

The clincher comes when the government weasels can't wait to shove the Comanche on to an arid reservation, while The Duke defends their quest to be left in peace.

All in all, an enjoyable technicolor reminder of a time when men ruled and wymynfolk were the adornments. I'm actually hoping that sentence makes other viewers cry. And it probably will, judging by the low-star reviews from members of The Glee Club.
