Royal Rumble 1992 Thoughts

Royal Rumble 1992 was the 5th annual Royal Rumble event produced by the WWF. It took place on January 19, 1992 at the Knickerbocker Arena in Albany, New York with 17,000 people in attendence. Buyrate was at 260,000 buys. The Royal Rumble at this event has often been regarded as the greatest royal rumble match of all time.

Show consisted of 5 matches with the main event of cousre featuring the Royal Rumble. However unlike the previous Rumbles, this Rumble itself wasn't just a random tradition match but now had something on the line. The WWF Championship. The belt was vacant. Also included was a special moment of Roddy Piper winning his first championship in his career.

The Good - The royal rumble match was spectacular and by far was one of the best of all time. First, the star power in the rumble was remarkable and looking at it in a later view is even better due to some of the young talent at the time. From Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Randy Savage, Roddy Piper and other stars, it was fully loaded. Also the prize being of the WWF Championship was also a unique idea for winning this rumble to actually mean something. Ric Flair also being in this match for nearly an hour was a huge boost for Flair. He worked hard for that entire hour and his heelish actions in the rumble were hilarious. Unlike the previous Rumbles, I also liked how they didn't care for the heel/face collisions as everyone wanted that championship. The opening matchup for the tag belts was also pretty good.

The Meh - Roddy Piper vs. The Mountie was really not good of a match. However Piper winning was special and he totally deserved a belt for his WWF career. While not affecting the Rumble the Hogan/Sid storyline about to go through didn't make much sense for Hogan to do what he did as a Babyface.

The Bad - The undercard as a whole wasn't really good. The Beverly Brothers vs. The Bushwackers was absolutely horrendous and one of the worst matches of the early rumbles. The Legion of Doom battling The Natural Disasters was also a major disappointment and the ending made a huge negative impact. Animal & Hawk despite being one of the best of all time, were known to have bad booking from both sides of them not being happy and stubborn or WWF being lousy.

Overrall - It's clear this show was really all of interest of the Royal Rumble and pretty much everyone will only watch this whole show again to see the classic match. Despite the bad undercard, Royal Rumble 1992 was a good show due to it's last hour.

*Note*Hogan getting boos later out when colliding Sid was a great clear sign of the Hulkamainia running it's course.
