The Sheepman (1958)
7/10
Funny and well-acted

'The Sheepman' is a well-acted western comedy that will keep you entertained until the last minute. The plot is not the most exciting and occasionally moves a little slowly, but the premise is nice and the dialogues are funny, especially the way Jason Sweet (played by Glenn Ford with a lot of understated dead-pan humour) keeps exploiting the expectations of the yokels who inhabit the cattle town where he settles down: They always expect him to behave like a proper westerner and are thrown completely off course when he does not. Shirley MacLaine (as Dell Payton) plays along nicely and Leslie Nielsen (as Col. Stephen Bedford) is convincing enough as the bad guy. When I said the film will keep you entertained to the last minute I meant that literally: It is the last minute that I found a little disappointing. Why does Sweet have to sell his sheep? Was it necessary to turn him into a last-minute conformist? Other than that: Good film!
