Review of Airheads

Airheads (1994)
5/10
90s cable mainstay

Pseudo-smart rock and roll comedy, which thinks it has something to say. It doesn't, but that doesn't make it any less fun. Tight screenplay, feeling like it's borrowed bits from dozens of slightly better films, enhanced by the solid comic turns of it's leads. Wannabe rock stars carry a prank too far, holding a radio station hostage. Perhaps the biggest flaw is we have no real investment in the characters. They are mere caricatures, stereotypes, to move the plot along. But, this is, in its own way, an essential piece of 90s pop art, and essential for anyone interested in the era. Funny how it ignores then-current trends in rock, completely. Will never retain classic status, but a solid midnight movie. In hindsight, this movie will be remembered mostly for early breakout roles of Fraser, Buscemi, Sandler, etc. And that is fitting.
