When they announced this I was a little on edge. Not because the animation (although that too), I was concerned if they were even going to do this correctly after The Long Haul.
Well, we have it now and it's really mediocre.
When I got a glimpse of the test animation of Greg pushing a snowball I thought it looked weird because I'm used to seeing it in live action or the cartoony-style in the books, but also cool. Because it looked like The Peanuts Movie, and I was excited.
But they probably got a way lower budget than expected, because the result is just weird.... The story is basically the same thing as the first book, but they dimmed down a lot of stuff here and because of that the movie, (if you can even call it that..) is 56 or 58 minutes long.
Greg is embarrassed by Rowley in this version and wants him to "grow up" because they're heading into middle school, he gets this thought put into his head by Rodrick which by the way, is in the film for a total of two minutes... Rowley is kind of a jerk too, they had him steal Greg's comic for some reason?
I couldn't have cared less if they hadn't crapped on Greg and Rowley's relationship.
Everything else though is missing except for the Halloween bit, which goes on for way too long.
There is no wrestling unit or Wizard of Oz play, and it completely destroyed the plot. They just focused way too much on Greg's relationship with Rowley, and because of that, the film just really derailed and cashed.
The new voices are great though, they sound like what I imagined them to sound like when I read the books.
I wish Susan didn't record from a Zoom call after Greg and Rowley got back from Snakeroad during the Halloween scene though. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go and watch that scene. The audio is terrible.
I'm really disappointed in this movie, I really love the live action movies and the books and was hoping for the first animated film a great one too. But alas, it didn't happen.
We've been waiting five years for a Wimpy Kid movie and this is the end product?
I hope the new animated Rodrick Rules movie is better than this...
