Solid Political Thriller with Strong Leading Role

In "Secret State," there was solid work in creating intimate scenes inside the halls of power in the British government. Gabriel Byrne is excellent as Tom Dawkins, the man thrust into the limelight and immersed in the pressure cooker with the death of PM Charles Flyte in a mysterious air crash.

The characters were well-developed with the mousey Agnes Evans the diligent computer expert who seems to eavesdrop on everything and everyone. Tony Fossett, Tom's old army buddy in Bosnia, plays a key role as the alcoholic buddy who stumbles upon the secrets of the air crash. Tom's cohorts in government are well deserving of the vote of no confidence they will receive, due to their unwillingness to truly serve the people of the UK.

Although the series began to drag with the third episode that introduced a "filler" subplot about the New Caledonia bank, the fourth and final episode was a taut and well-conceived finale. The tailored suits of Tom Dawkins served the role well, and Byrne's excellent performance rounded out the character of the PM to a tee.
