Good Times Indeed

I was too young to understand the show when it first aired, but it is one of the first shows I remember. I've watched the show as reruns over the years though. In my opinion Esther Rolle and James Amos were perfect together. As James and Florida, they give a pretty good depiction of a loving, married couple with children. They gently rib each other and share a lot of jokes and clearly love it. Their children, played by. Jimmie Walker (J. J.),Bern Nadette. Stanis (Thelma) and youngest. Ralph Carter (Michael) play off each other with their own antics and struggles. The show, which deals with their life in the Chicago projects, gives you a first hand look into a loving family who struggles with racial and income disparities. I love that so many of the jokes are also enjoyed by the cast, it makes you almost feel a part of what is happening.

I think maybe this show was an introduction to a lot of people about the struggles of others not like themselves. It is political, but rarely mean spirited without merit. As with most shows, the early seasons, particularly 1-3 are the best. The show fades after that as James Amos and then Esther Rolle end up leaving. A time capsule that brings up many headlines from the era add to the realism it portrays. That being said, remember it is a sitcom, and can miss the mark occasionally. I loved this show then and still love it.
