I'm Your Man (2021)
8/10
Thoughtful RomCom

Warning: Spoilers
Alma is a recently single researcher, who for the sake of funds for her research, agrees to accept an android, Tom, to be her life partner. At the end of three weeks she writes a report and gives Tom back.

Like all fictional androids, Tom is superhuman. He is as quick as a calculator, as strong as a champion weightlifter, but his 'algorithm' is emotionally imperfect. Also, his resting face is a little smirk that gets creepier over time.

That is the set-up for the romcom.

At first, Alma merely puts up with Tom. Tom does what his algorithm directs him to, and gets to know Alma better and changes to suit her better. His goal is to be her ideal friend and lover.

We get to learn a lot about Alma's back-story - her father and sister, her soon to be divorced husband, and her miscarriage. An example of Tom's awkwardness is when he sees Alma's ultrasound from a lost pregnancy and then says aloud what any adult would know but not say.

The film almost wraps up with Alma's report recommending that androids not become human companions, not because they are bad at it, but because they are too good, for humanity's sake.

I got lost in the characters, forgetting that actors were playing them. The final report and contrasting finishing scene showed how hard intellect and feelings collide and conflict. A good and believable entry in the genre of human + android + feelings movies.
