Brief Review -
Ingmar Bergman goes Bold, Feral, Outrageous and Sexually Explicit to end a conservative trilogy on shattering note. The plot focuses on two sisters, the younger a sensuous woman with a young son, the elder more intellectually oriented and seriously ill, and their tense relationship as they travel toward home through a fictional Central European country on the brink of war. The film has a runtime of around 95 minutes and still it takes too much time to let us know the characters and their problems. There's a chance that maybe the filmmaking was way ahead of time or still is and that's why i felt like it. For 50 minutes i was like trying to figure what's actually wrong with these two sisters? Is there anything horrible hidden in their past or is there anything with their sexual attraction? Well, i got the answers by the end but it didn't feel like worthy enough to make it such a tensed relationship. Some scenes in the film are unwatchable and unethical such as a 10 years old boy watching his Mom going in a room with an unknown man to have a sex and the then her own sister watching her in sultry positions and nobody hesitates. It was hard hitting stuff indeed, but quite excessive for not so strong reasons. However, the realistic execution and superb framework works very well. Bergman was full aware of what he was doing yet he didn't compromise with the explicit use of sexual material and surprisingly it wasn't censored and was even liked by Audience. Ingrid Thulin is fantastic as Ester, especially in those suffocation scenes she just nails it. Gunnel Lindblom looks hot but fails to beat Thulin. Overall, The Silence is very tough film to watch and it doesn't really give enough satisfaction after enduring so much but it deserves to be watched for nutcracking filmmaking of 60s.
