Impetigore (2019)
7/10
A rather entertaining horror movie...
3 February 2021
When I sat down to watch the 2019 Indonesian horror movie titled "Impetigore" (aka "Perempuan Tanah Jahanam") I must admit that I didn't know what to expect from the movie, as I hadn't even heard about it prior to sitting down to watch it. All I knew was that it was an Indonesian horror movie, which coincidentally was all that was needed to make me have an interest in watching it.

So I sat down with a clean slate, allowing writer and director Joko Anwar to have every opportunity to impress me. And I must admit that this is exactly what he did. This movie turned out to be a rather interesting and entertaining movie.

I especially liked the storyline in the movie, because it was a compelling storyline that quickly swept me away and took me away on an interesting, if not supernatural, ride of ups and downs. The movie was interesting from the very beginning, slowly building up suspense and momentum, and director Joko Anwar was good at keeping the pace and keeping the movie interesting and fresh. And it was a storyline that slowly fed the audience more and more information, slowly revealing bit by bit what was going on, and that is something I enjoy in a horror movie.

The atmosphere in the movie really helped to carry the movie a great way, because it was so foreboding and brooding. And there are some pretty good visual effects in the movie as well, which also helped the movie along nicely.

The acting in the movie was good, and it was nice to see Tara Basro (playing the lead role of Maya) on the screen again, and she really put on a great performance in "Impetigore". I wasn't familiar with Marissa Anita, Ario Bayu or Christine Hakim, but they definitely also put on great performances, adding a lot to the movie.

If you enjoy Asian horror movies, then "Impetigore" definitely puts Indonesia on the map with this amazingly entertaining and creepy horror movie. It is quite well-worth the time, money and effort. I can warmly recommend that you sit down to watch it, if you have the chance.

My rating of "Impetigore" lands on a well-deserved seven out of ten stars. This is Asian horror done right.
