Decent action-adventure film
24 January 2021
Professor Challenger comes back from South America with tales of a plateau where millions-of-years-extinct dinosaurs roam. When he is treated with derision he challenges all present to accompany him to witness this world. He gets a few volunteers and they set off to see for themselves the Lost World.

An adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel that would have been quite revolutionary for its time. The special effects, the dinosaur animation mixed in with filmed scenes, are quite amazing for 1925.

The story itself is okay. I haven't read the novel so I don't know how closely the film follows it. The backgrounds to the characters and the expedition are done pretty well as are certain aspects of the plot. However, the film does drag a bit in the third quarter or so as it really just becomes our intrepid adventurers escaping from dinosaurs and other beasts in predictable fashion.

Being a silent film does not help either as the dialogue boards slow the momentum of some of the dramatic scenes. Obviously this is unavoidable, due to when the film was made, but it doesn't help the film when viewed by modern audiences.

Overall, interesting enough and worth watching from an historic perspective as this would have been a giant step forward in film-making at the time.
