Calamity Jane and Painless Potter make a fun pair in this comedy Western

"The Paleface" is a very good, entertaining comedy Western with Bob Hope in one of his solo comedic roles. His "moll" for the mischief he gets into in this funny film is Jane Russell. It was only Russell's third film in six years, and she wouldn't make another movie until 1951. It's doubtful that this was her breakout role, but it didn't hurt to have a fine performance in a hit comedy in her portfolio. Her career really took off after her next film, the 1951 action mystery film with Robert Mitchum - "His Kind of Woman."

In this film, Russell plays Calamity Jane who gets a jail pardon for agreeing to become an undercover agent for the government. Her task was to find out who was running guns to hostile Indians. She has some hilarious scenes of shootouts with desperadoes at different times. Finally, she hitches her wagon - well, takes possess of a wagon owned by Painless Peter Potter. He's a male-order dentist who's in a hurry to leave town. They join up with a wagon train heading West.

The escapades and scenarios from there on provide some wonderful humor - in both antics and funny dialog. This is one of the best of Hope's movies, with more than half the credit going to Russell. It's one that the whole family should enjoy.
