Review of Dark Waters

Dark Waters (1993)
7/10
A must for fans of atmospheric horror!

I Highly recommend it if you love Lovecraftian atmosphere and ambiance horror with lots candles, wandering bricked corridors with a lantern, blood sacrifices and ghostly laughing children. Probably the only Nunsploitation from the 90s with an older vibe like the 70s Italian horror aesthetics. This is the sole feature film of director Mariano Baino and it's amazing to see him keeping the genre alive in the 1990s. The story is simple with a weak climax, it was rushed till then the atmosphere really works in the mood with outstanding background. I didn't think it was scary to the point of stressful, but I had no problem with the acting and heavy on atmosphere. The main character Elizabeth has done good and is likable, but nothing surpasses, and everything culminates in the Gothic dungeon nuns, best characters of all time, haunting especially the blind. The scene in which she is coming out is one the best moments of the film. Overall, it's a delight for horror fans and I feel the Director Baino must be appreciated for having achieved his nightmare. Do not hesitate to give it a shot, probably will work as a double bill with Michele Soavi's The Church. It's as blasphemous as they come.
