An Investigative Reporter Searching for Clues to a Murder
22 June 2020
"Steve McCleary" (John Derek) is an investigative reporter for the New York Express who is intent upon getting a scoop regardless of what it takes. To that extent, it's precisely this attitude which pleases his executive editor "Mark Chapman" (Broderick Crawford) who is equally determined to change what was once a prestigious newspaper into something that is more exploitative--and therefore more profitable. However, things don't go quite as planned when Steve begins to cover a story about a recent murder at a local Lonely Hearts ball which Mark would prefer to end coverage soon. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this was a pretty good film noir due in large part to the acting of the aforementioned Broderick Crawford and John Derek. I also appreciated the presence of Harry Morgan (as the photographer "Biddle") who seems tailor-made for pictures of this sort. That being said, I enjoyed this film for the most part and have rated it accordingly. Above average.
