Often great series get cancelled prematurely and get a sent-off in the form of a movie a few years later. Dead like me as a series is a rare gem, with an interesting premise, superb execution and an excellent cast with a marvelous chemistry between all of them. It was hampered somewhat by the leave of Bryan Fuller in the first season and the unfortunate departure of Rebecca Gayheart, though Daisy turned out to be a worthy replacement.
This movie 5 years later is not a disappointment in itself, though it is not without its (serious) flaws. First of all, Mandy Patinkin is sorely missed, but let's be happy his character didn't get the treatment of the Daisy character. Nothing against the replacement actress, but Laura Harris was so much better in it.
For those who have seen the series, there are also some annoying inconsistencies in the story. The series established well that a reaper could not contact his/her family without losing the memories of shared experiences. Here on the other hand, George is able to reveal herself to and convince Reggie. That bugs the hell out of me. Fortunately, the moments between George and Reggie turn out to be the best parts of the movie.
Clearly a 90 minute movie can't go into the character depth a series is able to, but it seems to me that Mason, Roxy and Daisy are too shallow in the movie and not involved enough to care.
Ok, the disposing of the annoying new boss is funny, but the complexity of their characters is lost here.
On the other hand not everything is bad here. I find it very rewarding that this movie ends with George being instated as the new Rube. Even if Mandy Patinkin would have participated, the moving on of his character and the passing of the baton to George is the correct way to end the movie.
So, while the story in itself maybe somewhat disappointing, the last two minutes of the movie are simply beautiful (aided by the wonderful music of Metisse).
