I haven't read the books yet so I can't comment on that. There's clearly a lot that could be done with the characters, the world and the magic here. Yet the film isn't very interesting. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, but there's nothing that it does great - character, scenes, drama, worldbuilding, tension, action, etc. - so it ends up disappointing.
