Kanaa (2018)
8/10
Sports drama well presented
6 January 2019
"Kanaa" (dream) Tamil movie. This is the story of Kawsallya, the village belle, her teammates call her Kausi. Murukeshan, the farmer, Kausi's father ... his obsession with cricket and inspiring his daughter to be a world class cricketer... is the theme of the movie. Reminded of "1983" the Malayalam movie based of cricket ... in 1983 that father inspired his son to be a good cricketer and get selected to the team, here ... this father takes the story further ahead. Very inspiring sports-drama, told in a thrilling manner. Father-daughter relationship depicted against the village background, theirs problems ... how orthodox villagers fail to accept a female cricketer, lack of practice grounds and facilities, stigma of playing cricket with boys, the national cricket board hurdles, their North Indian lobby, politics.... God.... the canvas is huge. Well captured pictures to give excellent cricket shots, to give a vivid picture. Hats off to camera work. Music is handled with care, the first song sung by Aaradana Shivakarthikeyan is catchy and elevated the pitch of the movie. Even though, story strayed off from the mainstream with unwanted repeated sentiments, the Director held his ground with the audience, well. The cherry on the cake, is the strong social message about agriculture and the urgent need for more social support for it. This is addressed well in this presentation.

8 on 10 for this 190 minutes of cricket drama. Aiswarya Rajesh proved once again, she's a mature heroine. Shivakarthikeyan deserves a salute for selecting such a unique plot and infusing mass thrilling moments and making a 'female-centric' project ... a grand success.
