Local Hero (1983)
7/10
A Movie That Has Cult Classic Written All Over It
12 October 2018
"Local Hero" is a laid back tale about a corporate developer (Peter Riegert) who travels to a small Irish village in order to persuade the inhabitants to sell their land. Instead, he falls for its charms.

The film reminded me somewhat of the book "The MIlagro Beanfield War," not because of what actually happens in it, but rather because of its vibe. There are hints of magical realism in a side story involving a love interest for Riegert's business partner that I wish had been developed more fully. The comedy, too, is so subtle and deadpan that someone not in the right mood while watching the film might miss it entirely. I guess my biggest complaint with the whole movie is that it's a bit TOO laid back. I was craving a bit more whimsy than I got.

The film also stars Burt Lancaster as a corporate mucky muck and Dennis Lawson, who it took me forever to identify as the actor who plays Wedge in the "Star Wars" movies.
