I know Who You Are

Warning: Spoilers
As this Spanish series opens a man is taken to hospital following a car crash. He claims to have no idea who he is or what happened before. It turns out that he is Juan Elías, a lawyer who lectures at the local university… he is also the chief suspect for the murder of Ana Saura; his missing niece! The police ask him about her but he claims to have no recollection of her. He doesn't even remember his own family; the only person he recalls is Eva Durán, a young lawyer he had an affair with eight years previously. Through a series of flashbacks over the course of the first half of the series we learn what happened in the run up to Ana's disappearance and ultimately what happened to her. Even when we know this there are more unanswered questions and more and more people get entangled in the events as the guilty parties try to protect themselves and point the finger of suspicion at others.

This was a gripping series; it was a pity that it was divided into two parts here in the UK but once it restarted it was very easy to remember what had happened before. The story was intriguing from the start as we have no idea whether Elias is telling the truth, there is even the possibility that no crime had been committed as there is talk that Eva was planning to run off to Thailand. Nearly all of the main characters behave in a suspicious manner at times and many of them are ultimately entangled in what has been going on. As the series approaches its end the question is which of them will get away with what they did and which won't and not everything will turn out as one might expect. The cast does an impressive job bringing their characters to life. Most notable are Francesc Garrido who is impressively ambiguous as Elías, Blanca Portillo as his wife, Susana Abaitua as Ana and Aida Folch as Eva. Overall this series was a fine addition to BBC4's Saturday night 'Euro-drama' slot.

These comments are based on watching the series in Spanish with English subtitles.
