Review of Joey

Joey (2004–2006)
7/10
A slow start but had a great potential
19 October 2014
After the very popular show Friends ended it took only two months before the spin off Joey aired, but unfortunately it didn't have the success a la Frasier and only lasted two seasons.

I have a feeling a major problem was that it was so soon. Many fans just wanted Friends 2. I have watched it long time after the ending of Friends when all the wounds were healed, and yet I felt they could have made just a bit more Friends references. They actually did a few and it was great to see so much of Joey's Hugsy the Penguin, but at the same time it felt weird that he seemed to miss more the snow than his buddies.

Another thing that I think was an issue with such an early start was that the writers didn't have enough time to think of more fun and original ideas. I did laugh but many jokes seemed to fabricated and the main strength of the show at the start was that it was Joey. Which unfortunately isn't enough. There were some terrific episodes and some that totally fell flat, I also noticed quiet a few story lines that reminded me of specific Friends stories but were just not as good. And this is when it got cancelled.

Towards the end of the last season I was seeing something promising and it was actually disappointing to see the show end. This mainly came from them finally finding spots for the characters in the story and also bringing an absolutely perfect character: Jimmy portrayed by Adam Goldberg. He was only 9 episodes on the show but to me he was one of the best parts of the show and who could have carried it pretty far. He also gave a great addition to an already great character, Joey's sister Gina (Drea de Matteo). Besides hose two there is another character that i loved: Bobbie (Jennifer Coolidge). She was one of the secondary characters but one of the highlights for me on every episode. Very extraordinary and greatly performed.

Other than that the characters hey made were not all that great. Michael, while a good balance to the a little dumb Joey was pretty boring. Alex was absolutely bland. Not that they never had a fun line or story but for the most part I didn't care. Zack and Howard were absolutely useless.

So yes, it could have been better but they didn't give it enough time to create. And I must say if they had a Gina/Jimmy spin off with some Bobby I would have loved watching it.
