5/10
Disappointing, mostly because it could've been a really good movie!

Warning: Spoilers
I went to this movie mainly because of 2 reasons:

1. It was produced by Anurag Kashyap as a producer and I generally trust this guys abilities as a director/producer.

2. I really enjoyed the movie trailer, especially the part with Parineeti Chopra in it.

I also believe Parineeti is the next big thing in Indian cinema and she has an excellent career ahead of her.

Now my problems with the movie:

  • The characterization of Meeta (Parineeti) was so choppy and inconsistent. She is shown as this geek (and almost like a freak with her twitching eyes and clowny faces) in the beginning of the movie with everyone criticizing her for being weird and troublesome etc...but within 7 days she is transformed into this singing/dancing/ghagra-choli wearing quintessential bollywood heroin. Her transformation is so sudden and so incoherent that it absolutely put me off the movie.

  • We are given absolutely no clue why the hero falls for this girl. This is true of most Bollywood movies but I came expecting better in this one and it turns out that we can never run away from the formulas that drain us week-in and week-out in a Bollywood movie. Ex: the hero sees the heroin getting dressed and he goes out to help her tie the hangings on the choli and then sparks fly...these are clichés which could've been easily avoided.

  • Ultimately what was most disappointing was that Meeta had to transform herself into a Bollywood diva for her to be ultimately liked/accepted by the hero. Why couldn't she be accepted as it is like a geek that she is?

Having said that, there are some excellent moments/elements in the movie which makes you feel that the makers ultimately cop-ed out of a good movie by adding Bollywood clichéd masala elements to it just to make it acceptable to a larger audience. This may pay off the because it could bring dividends in terms of Box office collection but I for one was very disappointed with the final outcome of what could've been a really excellent movie.
