Westward Ho! (1988 TV Movie)
6/10
Could have been better, but actually pretty enjoyable

The book is not easy to adapt I agree, and to be honest I was expecting worse with Westward Ho, like The Odyssey, Three Muskteers, Prisoner of Zenda and 20000 Leagues Under the Sea bad. Luckily it wasn't as bad, but nowhere near as good as the Burbank animations of Wind in the Willows, Peter Pan, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The main problem is the storytelling, there are some exciting moments, but it sadly suffers from being too condensed, too short and too rushed. I was also mixed on the animation quality, the backgrounds are colourful but the human character designs are rather crude. The writing has some wit but is a little too straightforward at times. Conversely, the music is both beautiful and memorable, and the characters do have interesting personalities and are well voiced by a solid voice cast. The exotic animals are fun to watch and generally beautifully drawn. All in all, enjoyable but with a longer length and more succinct storytelling it could have been even better. 6/10 Bethany Cox
