Warning: Spoilers
Count me disappointed.

If I had reviewed the first two seasons, I would have given it a 10: fun, intelligent, not profane, something you can watch with your mother- in-law. We were SO enjoying this until the end of the third season, in which Ellingham and Louisa are all set to marry, and then both decide they just can't.

Here is a character that likes to call others who don't agree with him 'stupid'. Yet he goes and has unprotected sex with Louisa, and in the first episode of Season 4, she shows up at his door pregnant. At that point, I checked the plot of the fourth season, only to find that it deteriorates into moral nonsense. Why is this bad? Because the sex thing is completely out of character for Doc Martin, and does nothing to show me how GOOD life can be when one does what is right.

What is it with you Brits? Would it kill your producers and writers to show someone doing the right and intelligent thing? Almost exactly the same thing happened in Bramwell, in which a Victorian-era female doctor is presented fighting against the system and succeeding wonderfully despite the struggle against prejudice....and then she gets pregnant, whereupon the whole thing becomes a struggle indebted to the most amazing stupidity. Both of these shows would have been a delight to follow, and would have lost NOTHING by having their characters get married, raise a family, and deal with life and the quirky characters around them while learning to be patient with one another's foibles and oddities.

I'm not saying that American TV is any better. I wouldn't be fleeing to British TV if it were. Your actors are AWESOME, and they aren't all unrealistically pretty. I just get SO SICK of the constant descent into trashiness. LIFE CAN BE GOOD, PEOPLE.

OY!
