Miss Marple with gusto...
3 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Miss Marple to the distress of the judge, knits her way through jury service in order to aid her concentration. She alone finds the accused not guilty since the murder victim wore a rose, and she would hardly do so to greet her murderer. Through a series of investigations she discovers, ably assisted by Mr Stringer, her real life husband Stringer Davies, that a play is behind the crime, and she joins a second-rate theatrical company led by Ron Moody who excels as a ham actor. Sussing that Miss Marple is not short of a bob or two, he engages her as an apprentice (unpaid) with a view to having her back his frightful play "Remember September". Miss Marple up to the neck in dead bodies, solves the mystery and proves to be a former small-arms champion. We will recall that she was also a riding champion and fencing champion. Miss Marple has led such an active life. She is a very different Miss Marple from the books but Dame Margaret carried the role superbly. When offered the role she apparently said that she could not be involved in murder, but it was explained to her that the accent was on Miss Marple and that changed her mind. She and Dame Agatha Christie became great friends. An excellent quartet of films. Pity it did not go further.
