D.E.B.S. (2004)

Is it just me?
2 March 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Is it just me, or did anyone else notice that this movie is a scene by scene, beat by beat rip-off of Valley Girl? No? Take a look again. The director not only uses the same story beats, but actually has the nerve to use the same framing for many of the shots and DIALOGUE lifted from the other film.

After viewing it, I thought I would give the director the benefit of the doubt and watched the bonus material on the DVD, thinking that she would at least say something about paying homage too Valley Girl or something. But not a word about it in the interview. In fact, one of the producers, while explaining how they acquired the film based on a short student project of the director's, actually says that she was amazed at how fast the feature script came together. She attributes this to the writer/director knowing the characters so well that the script came easy.

Sure. It's a lot easier to write a script when all you have to do is change the character names, the set up, and some of the dialogue.

And yes, you can say that nothing is new in Hollwood. But come on. Someone needs to fess up here.
