Bernard Deyriès has found a very interesting way to transfer the Segur classic to the screen.Instead of treating each chapter one after the other ,which could be rather dull -as Jean-Claude Brialy 's attempt had already showed-,he chose to group several stories in four sketches :"the tea" "the donkey" "funeral for a doll" and "glacé fruits" .He introduced characters who would appear later in Segur's work (Jean and Leon are featured in "les vacances" but they appear in the donkey episode).Paul's parents are not good parents, but it will only be revealed in "les vacances" too.

It's the first part of a trilogy, which encompasses "les petites filles modèles" and "les vacances" .Those books were also transferred to the screen by Dériès and François and are available on DVD (but under the general title of "les malheurs de Sophie").Recommended for grade schools who wish to study Segur's works.
