Let me start off by saying that I have not seen the original film. That said, I think that The Vanishing is one of the most fascinating, but disturbing, thrillers I've seen. The acting is good in some places and bad in some places. Nancy Travis's character, I thought, was kind of annoying. Kiefer Sutherland is good as the obsessed and grieving boyfriend. But the best performance is Jeff Bridges. I think he stole the show as the psychapathic kidnapper/killer with energy. The fact that there seems to be no motive for his crimes makes him more menacing. The ending, I thought, was a little forged, considering what I've heard about the original vanishing's ending, but all in all, it was a pretty good film.
