Review of The Cell

The Cell (2000)
It's hard to explain why I liked it...
28 June 2001
In general I avoid really violent movies. But this one looked so visually interesting from the previews that I thought I would try it. I told my partner that I would start it with him, and most likely walk out soon and go to the bookstore where he could find me when it was over.

But I stayed through the whole thing. And I liked it a lot. The grossness and violence did not affect me like I expected. Maybe that was a bad thing??? It was dream violence, in parts it was almost "cartoon" violence (Ren and Stimpy style - the intestine thing). The movie was so stylized and surreal that I enjoyed just looking at everything and going for the ride, even though the plot sucked, the characters were shallow, and the acting was mostly sub-par.

Actually, maybe it was because the acting was so bad and the characters so under-developed that the violence didn't bother me. I didn't really care.

Overall, another movie for those of us who enjoy the sensual (I do not mean beautiful) over the mental.
