So-so debut.
30 December 2003
Kevin Spacey's directorial debut neither dazzles nor disappoints. It sets up its premise a bit haphazardly, but gets better as it progresses, and the temperature of tension begins to rise. The material is cliched and some of the tough-guy dialogue sounds forced (especially in the beginning), but Spacey has wisely let his excellent cast do most of the work (under his guidance, of course): all the performances are good, but the best one is probably given by the least-known star, William Fichtner, as the "edgier" of the three crooks.
