Nick of Time (1995)
7/10
Underrated thriller
23 October 2001
A businessman (Johnny Depp) has just arrived in L.A. with his young daughter, when she is kidnaped by a man and a woman. Depp is ordered to assassin a very important Governor, or his daughter will be killed. And he is only given about an hour to do the dirty work. Since Depp loves his daughter very much, he is prepared to do almost everything to save her. But how will he save her without killing any innocent people? The clock is ticking.

The smart gimmick with "Nick of Time" is actually the fact that the clock is ticking while we (the audience) are watching. Depp has exactly as much time to kill the Governor as it takes for us viewers to see this movie. A very clever idea, which works pretty well. Even if the dramatic close-ups of the time ticking appears every third minute and therefore becomes irritating after while.

The acting is first class all the way. One of my personal favorite actors, Johnny Depp, makes an excellent performance as Mr Watson, the innocent man being dragged into this conspiracy against his own will. Christopher Walken (always great) is terrifying as the man following Depp all the time, checking that he will do what he is supposed to.

Good direction as well, it feels like you´re following Depp around trying to find a solution to the big problem on his hands. The movie contains many clever turns, but unfortunately also some huge gaps in the story. And sometimes the story´s a bit too silly, for my taste.

But this is still an underrated thriller, with a smart plot and great acting.
