Scott Ryan’s “Mr Inbetween,” which will premiere its third season on May 25 on FX, is ending with this upcoming season.
The half-hour series, created by, written and starring Scott Ryan and directed by Nash Edgerton, centers on Ryan’s Ray Shoesmith, a criminal for hire who collects debts, drugs and guns, and sometimes “takes care of people” in a permanent way as he juggles being a dad and taking care of an aging parent.
In the third season of “Mr Inbetween,” Ray will deal with the loss of Bruce, figure out how to care for his aging father Bill (Kenny Graham), and be faced with his daughter Brittany (Chika Yasumura) possibly discovering who he really is. Ray is now working freelance and feeling isolated after severing ties with former boss and confidant Freddy (Damon Herriman), but with business booming, a new connection with kingpin Rafael (Jeremy Sims) compounds Ray’s problems.

The upcoming third season will be the last for FX’s Mr Inbetween. FX has opted not to pick up a fourth season of the Australian drama series, created by, written and starring Scott Ryan and directed by Nash Edgerton.
The nine-episode third season will premiere on Tuesday, May 25 at 10 pm Et/Pt on FX and be available to stream the following day on FX on Hulu. The premiere will include the first two episodes, with one new episode airing each subsequent week.
Mr Inbetween, inspired by Ryan’s 2005 cult film The Magician, centers on Ray Shoesmith (Ryan), a father, ex-husband, boyfriend and best friend: tough roles to juggle in the modern age. Even harder when you’re a criminal for hire.

Scott Ryan.
Scott Ryan can be grateful that Helen Mirren and her husband, director Taylor Hackford, are fans of his FX/Fox Showcase show Mr Inbetween.
The couple urged their Hollywood agent, CAA veteran Fred Specktor, to watch both series of the dramedy created by and starring Ryan as hit man for hire Ray Shoesmith.
Specktor binge-watched the show, obtained Ryan’s email from a friend in Australia, got in touch via Zoom and offered to represent him.
“Yeah, sure,” was the laconic response from the actor/writer who had been open to working in the Us.
Specktor, who turned 87 in April, has an illustrious talent roster including Morgan Freeman, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Jeremy Irons, Geoffrey Rush, Peter Bogdanovich, Dan Aykroyd, Philip Kaufman, Stephen Hopkins and playwright Jez Butterworth.

Scott Ryan in ‘Mr Inbetween.’
In the heart-wrenching climactic scene of the last episode of Mr Inbetween, Scott Ryan’s Ray Shoesmith carried out the mercy killing of his brother then torched the house.
So what is next for the troubled hit man and single father as Ryan maps out the third season of the FX/Fox Showcase drama laced with dark humour?
Without spoilers, the show’s star, creator and writer tells If: “Season three will probably be more like season one in tone; it won’t be as dark as season two. But there will also be room for some pretty dark stuff.”
Justin Rosniak as Ray’s gormless best friend Gary will be even more prominent in the new season. Also returning are Chika Yasumura as his daughter Brittany and, he hopes, Damon Herriman as his boss, nightclub owner Freddy.

In its first season, the title of FX’s Mr. Inbetween suggested several things. The first was the niche its main character, Ray Shoesmith (played by the show’s creator, Scott Ryan), has carved out for himself providing violent, often lethal, solutions to other people’s problems. The second was the show’s careful perching on the line between drama and comedy, with each compact, under-30-minute episode mixing wry humor with much darker material. The third was the way that Ryan couldn’t seem to decide whether he was...

When “Mr Inbetween” premiered a year ago this September, it was enveloped by the rather large shadow of another half-hour hitman series, “Barry.” Bill Hader’s first season had wrapped months prior to Scott Ryan’s FX debut, but it was in the middle of what proved to be a very successful Emmys run and comparisons between the two dark comedies were unavoidable. They still are, as “Barry” continues to dominate cultural conversation (on its way to another likely score at the Emmys) and “Mr Inbetween” hopes to find its own space within the ever-growing TV sphere.
To be clear, it deserves one. The sharply written and well-performed Australian series isn’t in “Barry’s” upper-echelon of comedy, but it’s smart, wickedly funny, and, in Season 2, purposeful. And much of its new direction can be found in the clear differences between this bald, mustachioed hitman (played by Ryan) and his tall,...

FX has renewed Australian drama “Mr Inbetween” for a second season.
The second season will premiere in 2019, broadcasting day-and-date on FX in the U.S. and Foxtel in Australia.

Ryan first introduced audiences to the hitman’s story when he wrote, directed and starred in the 2005 indie flick “The Magician.”

Brooke Satchwell and Scott Ryan in ‘Mr Inbetween.’ (Photo: Mark Rogers).
The chances of a second season of Mr Inbetween, the hitman comedy-action-drama created by and starring Scott Ryan, look better than good following the show’s Us premiere on the FX network last Tuesday.
The network, which has 90 million subscribers, uses three key criteria for deciding whether or not to renew a show: Critical acclaim/awards; audiences’ responses including social media; and executives’ belief in the series.
If Mr Inbetween ticks two of those three boxes, FX will almost certainly co-commission with Foxtel another series from Jungle Entertainment and Blue-Tongue Films.
Directed by Nash Edgerton and co-starring Brooke Satchwell, Edgerton’s daughter Chika Yasumura, Damon Herriman, Justin Rosniak and Matt Nable, it premieres on Fox Showcase on October 1 at 8.30 pm.

Does Ray's FX show have a shot at survival? As we all know, the Nielsen ratings typically play a big role in determining whether a TV show like Mr Inbetween is cancelled or renewed for season two. Unfortunately, most of us do not live in Nielsen households. Because many viewers feel frustrated that their viewing habits and opinions aren't considered, we'd like to offer you the chance to rate all the season one episodes of Mr Inbetween below.

Before “Barry” stormed (North) Hollywood and “Killing Eve” killed everyone but, “Mr. Inbetween” wedged itself into the first-ever Sundance Episodic lineup. Premiering alongside everything from a screaming, drooling, animated tortoise to Steve James’ acclaimed Starz docuseries “America to Me,” the half-hour Australian import broke through with an unnervingly natural approach to a mob hitman’s sordid profession. Bits of unsuspected violence are cut with moments of utter absurdity. It’s surprising and intriguing, but Nash Edgerton’s unassuming vision is also a thoughtful evaluation of an ugly world where violence is the accepted norm.
“Mr. Inbetween” stood out then — and stands out now, after FX picked it up in the U.S. — for its pitch-black comedy, but it resonates because the eponymous mister is caught in an internal moral struggle he’s only now becoming aware of; he’s not actively trying to quit the game, like Barry Berkman, nor...

TV and film have long been fascinated with the inner lives of spies, assassins, and people who otherwise operate underground and out of sight. Untangling the possible motivations someone might have to live such a life, not to mention carry out startling and sometimes downright horrific acts, provides so much narrative catnip that hardly a month goes by without a new variation on the same theme. 2018’s TV has already had a couple sterling examples in HBO’s “Barry” and BBC America’s “Killing Eve,” both of which manage to depict the lives of assassins in ways we’ve never seen before — which is, after so many other attempts, a real feat.
So if you’re going to try your hand at a hitman story, it’s on you to come up with something more interesting than the many dozens we’ve seen before. “Mr Inbetween,” unfortunately, doesn’t.

Scott Ryan, creator and star of FX’s new Mr Inbetween, already has won TCA’s award for Most Low Key Panelist.
In May, FX announced it had ordered a six-episode first season of Mr Inbetween, a half-hour drama series from Ryan and Nash Edgerton, inspired by Ryan’s 2005 cult film The Magician, for premiere on FX and Foxtel in Australia this fall.
Created by and starring Ryan, and directed by Edgerton, Mr Inbetween centers on Ray Shoesmith, a father, ex-husband, boyfriend, best friend, hit-man.
Ryan, who is Australian, got asked the inevitable America-centric question, wanting him to weigh in on a what a big deal it is to get a U.S. pickup. “I was a little surprised,” he said, refreshingly hype-free.
“It was great to get picked up for sure,” he added, taking the prize.
Another TV critic wanted Ryan to explain the difference between American and Australian crime shows.

FX has just picked up something from down under.
The cabler placed a series order for “Mr Inbetween,” a half-hour drama created by and starring Australian actor Scott Ryan and directed by Nash Edgerton, Eric Schrier and Nick Grad, Presidents of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions announced Friday.
In “Mr Inbetween,” which wrapped filming in Australia earlier this year, Ryan plays Ray Shoesmith, a father, ex-husband, boyfriend and best friend: tough roles to juggle in the modern age — and even harder when you’re a criminal for hire. Ryan first introduced audiences to the hitman’s story when he wrote, directed and starred in the 2005 indie flick “The Magician.”

Along with Ryan, the cast includes Damon Herriman (“Justified”), Justin Rosniak, Brooke Satchwell, Jackson Tozer, Nicholas Cassim, Chika Yasumura and Matt Nable.
Ryan, Edgerton and Jason Burrows executive produce, with Michele Bennett grabbing a producer credit. The six-episode season, written by Ryan and directed by Edgerton (the man behind the camera for Amazon Studio’s “Gringo”), is slated to premiere on FX and Foxtel this fall. FX and Foxtel have commissioned a writers room for a season 2.
The FX Original Series hails from Blue-Tongue Films ad Jungle Entertainment, in association with FX Productions, Screen Australia and Create Nsw.

“‘Mr Inbetween’ is an extraordinary achievement for Scott Ryan, who took it from an indie film with a cult following to a half-hour drama that he stars in,” Schrier said. “Scott is one of those rare creators who can bring his own character to life on screen, and he is perfectly paired with Nash Edgerton, who brilliantly directed all six episodes. This project is a great inaugural step with Foxtel as the home of FX Original Series in Australia.”
“I couldn’t be happier to be sharing Scott Ryan’s character Ray with as many people as possible, and Scott and I couldn’t be more excited to have ‘Mr Inbetween’ on FX and Foxtel,” Edgerton added.
Edgerton, also an established Hollywood stuntman, has other film and television credits that include “The Matrix” trilogy, “Star Wars Episode II,” “Star Wars Episode III,” “The Thin Red Line,” “The Great Gatsby,” “The Gift” and “Zero Dark Thirty.”
