The arrest of Duane “Keefe D” Davis, a former Southside Crips gang leader, in the murder of Tupac Shakur on Sept. 29, over 27 years after the legendary rapper’s killing in Las Vegas, sent shockwaves across the world. For over a decade, Keefe D had confessed that he’d ordered the murder, was in the car that pulled up next to the BMW carrying Tupac, and that his nephew Orlando Anderson, a fellow Crip who’d gotten into a scrap with Tupac hours earlier at the MGM Grand Hotel, had fired...

Since the arrest and indictment of Duane “Keffe D” Davis for the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur, people have speculated about whether the Los Angeles Police Department will be reinvigorated to pursue an investigation into the other great tragedy of that era in hip-hop — the 1997 murder of the Notorious B.I.G. But former LAPD detective Greg Kading, who was the lead detective of an interagency task force created in 2006 to investigate Biggie’s murder, tells Rolling Stone that he feels the murder was likely the result of a smaller conspiracy that would...

Duane Davis, a former gang member known as Keffe D, was indicted on one count of murder with a deadly weapon by a Nevada grand jury Friday.
The victim: Tupac Shakur.
It’s a case that has made national headlines since 1996 when it took place and has been the subject of a multitude of documentaries and scripted projects.
Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur, directed by Allen Hughes, one-time friend and one-time foe of Tupac’s, was the most high-profile recent series, having premiered in April. The series focuses on Tupac’s relationship with his mother Afeni, a Black Panther activist, rather than his death.
Hughes told Deadline that today was a “great day for the family.”
He revealed that when he was pitching the project around Hollywood, he had a different subtitle: This Is Not A Murder Investigation.
“[Dear Mama] was very matter of fact, very frank about what happened.

Las Vegas police have arrested a man in the deadly 1996 drive-by shooting of Tupac Shakur, a long-awaited break in a case that has frustrated investigators and fascinated the public ever since the hip-hop icon was gunned down on the Las Vegas Strip 27 years ago.
Duane “Keffe D” Davis was arrested early Friday morning, although the exact charge or charges were not immediately clear, according to two officials with first-hand knowledge of the arrest. They were not authorized to speak publicly ahead of an expected indictment later Friday.
Davis has long been known to investigators and has himself admitted in interviews and in his 2019 tell-all memoir, Compton Street Legend, that he was in the Cadillac where the gunfire erupted during the September 1996 drive-by shooting. Shakur was 25 when he was gunned down.
The arrest comes more than two months after Las Vegas police raided his wife’s home July 17 in neighbouring Henderson.

A Las Vegas man was arrested and charged Friday in connection to the fatal drive-by shooting of Tupac Shakur in 1996. Duane “Keffe D” Davis was arrested Friday morning. He has officially been charged with murder with use of a deadly weapon.
A Nevada grand jury indicted Davis in the killing, prosecutors announced in court Friday. Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc Digiacomo called Davis the “on-ground, on-site commander” who “ordered the death” of Shakur.
Back in July, Las Vegas police revealed that they had searched Davis’ home in connection with the investigation of Shakur’s murder.

The investigation into rapper Tupac Shakur‘s 1996 murder continues as police continue to search for answers nearly 30 years later.
The Las Vegas Metro Police confirmed to Et that a search warrant was served at a home in Henderson, Nevada Monday as part of the ongoing investigation into Shakur’s death. The Lvmpd declined to comment further.
Shakur was shot multiple times in Las Vegas in 1996 while leaving a boxing match at the MGM Grand Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip.
The “Dear Mama” rapper was in a car with Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight when a white Cadillac pulled up beside them and began shooting out of the back window, killing Shakur.
While authorities believed at the time that the 25-year-old rapper was the intended target of the shooting, the investigation remains unsolved, with police continuing to search for answers as to who killed the Grammy-nominated musician.

No, there’s not about to be an arrest in the cold case from the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, Las Vegas police told TheWrap.
“We are aware of the statements made in the BET interview regarding the Tupac case. As a result of those statements we have spent the last several months reviewing the case in its entirety,” Lt. Ray Spencer, who heads up the Lvmpd Homicide Section, told TheWrap in a statement Thursday. “Various reports that an arrest warrant is about to be submitted are inaccurate. This case still remains an open homicide case.”
So what is this interview they are referencing that has led the Lvmpd to review the case “in its entirety” over the last few months? Jonez made a big splash this year as Christopher “Biggie” Wallace in USA Networks’ drama Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G. which follows the infamous East Coast-West Coast beef between the two that resulted in Tupac being shot in Las Vegas in 1996 and dying a few days later, and Biggie being gunned down in Los Angeles six months after that. Despite dozens and potentially hundreds of witnesses and allegations of police involvement and cover-ups, neither case is officially closed.

Tonight, Season 1 of USA Network’s scripted true crime series “Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G.” will end with an episode titled “Unsolved?” That sounds about right for creator Kyle Long, who believes it is actually pretty obvious what happened here. At least in the case of the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur.
“I would say, in regards to the Tupac murder, I think it’s — you know — very clear what happened,” Long told TheWrap in an interview last week. “There’s elements of it that are questionable, but certainly Keffe D and the Southside Crips killed Tupac Shakur. And it is outrageous that Keffe D is not in jail. And that should be in the article.”
“In the [‘Unsolved’] finale, when you see why the whole Keffe D thing, how he had immunity and that — long story short, in real life and in the television show, he had immunity to make this confession to the task force,” Long said of the Southside Crips member and the late Orlando Anderson’s uncle, real name Duane Keith Davis. “When the task force fell apart he still had immunity.”

“But this guy, this year — no one is talking about this, but I guess people just don’t care about Tupac Shakur, a young black man — he, this guy goes on a documentary this year and tells a version of the same story, he tries to go all cute and say, ‘I don’t know who triggered there,'” Long said. “But he talked about being in the car with the Crips, they specifically went to hunt [Tupac] down and then Tupac gets shot, you just have to say who pulled the trigger.”
However, Long says it ultimately “doesn’t matter that he doesn’t say who pulled the trigger.”
“He went live on television and confessed to being an accessory to murder and the Las Vegas Pd, as far as I know, is doing nothing about it,” Long continued. “And I just think it’s outrageous. I just don’t understand it. It makes me upset. And it’s just crazy town to me. It is so wild that a guy can — and I don’t know what kind of lawyer he has telling him to go on this television show and talk about it, but you know, it’s crazy. So that’s my rant about Keffe D and the Tupac murder, like to me, that murder, you could go arrest someone for that right now.”

Long is referencing an episode of Bet’s “Death Row Chronicles” docuseries which aired in February and featured interviews with Davis and former Lapd detective Greg Kading about Shakur’s murder.
Kading, who wrote the book “Murder Rap: The Untold Story of Biggie Smalls & Tupac Shakur Murder Investigations,” is one of the key characters in the show “Unsolved” (played by Josh Duhamel), as he led investigations into the murders of Shakur and Christopher Wallace aka Biggie Smalls. He is also a co-executive producer on the USA series.
Multiple attempts by TheWrap to reach Davis for comment for this story were unsuccessful. All phone calls made to numbers associated with Davis went unreturned or led to disconnected lines. Emails sent to addresses associated with Davis and his relatives went unanswered. Both Bet and NBCUniversal did not have current contact information for Davis. Attempts to locate contact information for Davis through arrest records and to reach Wayne Higgins — an attorney who is listed in court documents as having previously represented Davis — were also unsuccessful.

USA Network’s Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. takes us into the way back — exploring two of the most mysterious and unsolved murders in history, those of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls (Christopher Wallace). For a show called (branded, really) “Unsolved,” the first season certainly drives toward a definitive ending. The new USA anthology series serves as a detailed, time-jumping, and exploratory journey into multiple, years-long investigations, but it isn’t a nuanced take on the criminal justice system (or nuanced at all, for that matter). Nor is “Unsolved” a human story meant to honor the victims or the men seeking justice for their deaths. It plays out like a mystery, and by the end of the seventh episode (out of 10 total), “The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G.” takes a stand behind one theory.
For cable TV, perhaps that should be expected. It would take a lot of moxie to launch a franchise based around big questions without any answers — kind of like making an entire TV show based around a mystery that will never be solved — and USA’s...

There have been a lot of shows featuring the murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. Most of them have been documentaries, and none of them have had the time devoted to them that Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G. allows.
While I am a fan of true crime, I'm not a fan of rap music and found the history between the two men so complex it wasn't something I ever took the time to understand.
After watching the first seven hours of this impressive USA limited series, that's going to change.
If I knew little of the lives of Tupac and Biggie going into the series, I knew even less of what to expect of the production based on a book by Greg Kading, who is also one of the lead characters played by Josh Duhamel.

The Notorious B.I.G. was shot to death 20 years ago on March 9, 1997. The rapper’s murder will be forever linked with that of his peer Tupac Shakur, though the pair are just in a long line of musicians who’ve shuffled off the mortal coil under less-than-clear circumstances. Even if the ink has dried on the official paperwork, rumors still abound about …

Possibly the greatest “pure” soul singer in American history, Cooke’s career was on the rise after a string of hits when he was shot to death in a seedy L.A. motel, allegedly by the hotel’s manager in self-defense.

USA has come up with a show, similar to Making a Murderer or American Crime Story: The People V. Oj Simpson, where they will explore unexplained deaths; a scripted true crime series. Unsolved, at least in the first season, will focus on the deaths of the great Tupac and Biggie Smalls. This hits home to me as I was affected by Tupac's death immensely. I never listened to Biggie until years later, and at that point I realized how tragic of a loss these two performers were.
It is still unclear who actually committed the murders of these two individuals, even though we Know -- we have no proof, and USA intends on exploring this.
Who will actually portray these roles is the big question that was answered today.
Marcc Rose will reprise the role he played as Tupac in Straight Outta Compton, and what a great pick this is.

Dubbed one of the fiercest rivalries not just in music, but the entire entertainment world, the bitter and very public spat between Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls (real name: Christopher Wallace) divided America’s rap scene like never before, spawning spiteful songs in the vein of “Hit ‘Em Up” and “Who shot ya?” before both musicians were fatally shot following drive-by shootings across ’97 and ’96.
What followed was an intense murder investigation, as multiple law enforcement agencies were drafted in to crack the case. It’s that story that will soon play out on the silver screen in Brad Furman’s LAbyrinth, but Variety is reporting that USA Network – the company known recently for the Mr. Robot series – is ready to make a foray into the Tupac-Biggie saga with Unsolved. USA Networks recently announced that they had greenlit a pilot for Unsolved, a scripted true crime series that will chronicle the investigations into the murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G.
The two rappers were murdered only six months apart in 1997, both in drive-by shootings by unknown killers. Their deaths shook the rap world and highlighted its connections to gangs and gang-violence, prompting stories that the deaths were linked and part of an East Coast-West Coast rivalry in hip hop.
Unsolved is based on the Lapd Detective Greg Kading, who led several task forces that investigated the murders of the two iconic rappers, and wrote it all in a book titled Murder Rap: The Untold Story of Biggie Smalls & Tupac Shakur Murder Investigations. Kading is directly involved as a consultant on the pilot script of the show.
