The California Film Commission announced 24 upcoming projects that will benefit from the state’s Film and TV Tax Credit Program on Monday,” including an upcoming Michael Jackson biopic and a remake of “The Thomas Crown Affair.” Total, the projects will receive a combined $81.7 million break for generating an estimated $662 million in spending.
Based on the 1968 feature, which was previously revisited in a Pierce Brosnan-starring remake in 1999, “The Thomas Crown Affair” will star Michael B. Jordan in a script penned by Wes Tooke (“Midway”) for producers Joe and Anthony Russo. “Michael,” the Michael Jackson biopic from Lionsgate and filmmaker Antoine Fuqua, will star the late pop icon’s own nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in its title role.

Exclusive: Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society has come aboard to produce the Sony TriStar Pictures adaptation of N.K Jemisin’s The Broken Earth, which the studio acquired last summer in a seven-figure deal with the intention of turning it into a fantasy-action franchise. Jordan and Outlier Society President Elizabeth Raposo will produce the film adaptation via the Outlier Society banner. Jemisin is writing the script.
Each book in Jemisin’s series — The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate and The Stone Sky — won the Hugo Award for Best Novel, making her the first person to win the award three years in a row and the first to win for all three books in a trilogy.
The Fifth Season establishes the setting, a harsh futuristic Earth and a continent called the Stillness, which endures seasonal apocalyptic events that shake the world and its inhabitants during these “seasons.” They hole up in communities and then rebuild.

Will fan disappointment over the final season of “Game of Thrones” subsided enough by 2022 that the world will be ready to return to Westeros? HBO is banking on that outcome. The cable network has a “Game of Thrones” prequel series called “House of the Dragon” in production now.
“House of the Dragon” will expand the world of the megahit fantasy series, telling a story about the golden-haired, dragon-riding royals of House Targaryen – the family that produced Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) – centuries before the events of “Game of Thrones.” It’s based on “Fire & Blood,” a novel by George R.R. Martin that was written as a companion to his “A Song of Ice and Fire” series. The first season will be 10 episodes long. It’s the first project to make it to series out of a number of “Game of Thrones” spin-offs HBO has in development.

‘Dolemite Is My Name’ Writer Larry Karaszewski Recalls 10-Year Journey to Make Rudy Ray Moore Biopic
“Harriet” writer-director Kasi Lemmons was in a reflective mood at Tuesday night’s “Behind the Scene” event at the Formosa Cafe in West Hollywood, sponsored by the Writers Guild of America West.
The biopic, starring Cynthia Erivo as slave-turned-abolitionist Harriet Tubman, has been receiving buzz since its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. It’s Lemmons’ fifth movie in 22 years, going back to “Eve’s Bayou.”
“To make movies, I have to have that incredible focus,” Lemmons explained. “So Harriet was my anchor. She’s easy to love.”
“I wanted to do a movie that felt big even if it wasn’t and I wanted to do with the scope it deserved,” she added. “I wanted to research, feel who she was and bring all that detail into it. At first, I didn’t really understand the textures of Maryland and I didn’t get that it was a...

Roland Emmerich’s WWII epic “Midway” is heading for the No. 1 slot at the box office with an estimated $17.5 million from 3,242 domestic locations.
The number marks a slight drop from Friday’s estimate in the $20 million-plus range, but is still significantly ahead of early tracking’s $13 million prediction. “Midway” is on track to come out ahead of Stephen King adaptation “Doctor Sleep,” which is looking at around $13.5 million from 3,855 North American sites, though estimates are still fluid until final tallies on Monday.
The war film, timed to release with Veterans Day, took in $6.34 million on Friday. Lionsgate is distributing “Midway,” whose star-studded cast includes Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, Ed Skrein, Nick Jonas, Patrick Wilson, Darren Criss, Aaron Eckhart, Mandy Moore, and Dennis Quaid. Emmerich directed the film, which recreates the 1942 Battle of Midway, from Wes Tooke’s script. It’s one of the most expensive indie movies ever made, with a $100 million budget.

Midway, directed by Roland Emmerich, is a kinda-remake of a not-very-good movie from 1976 about the impressive World War II battle. For as consequential as the Battle of Midway was, let us hope there will one day be a feature film to properly match the subject matter. The first Midway, directed by Jack Smight, starred some of the biggest–and oldest–stars at the time: Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, and Robert Mitchum, to name a few. This new one is a little lighter on the star power. There’s Dennis Quaid, Aaron Eckhart, and a wig-heavy Woody Harrelson to be sure, but the majority of screen time is devoted to a younger set of talent.
Ed Skrein leads the ensemble, playing a cocksure soldier named Dick Best. It is a character name that, was it not based on a real-life hero, would be a bit too much. But then, it does fit here.

If Midway really was the hot shit it thinks it is, we’d have something to talk about. But this spare-no-expense production about the most vital naval battle of WWII merely plasters the latest in digital effects over the same war-time movie tropes that Hollywood has been pedaling for decades. Director Roland Emmerich scored a box-office bonanza by showing the United States kicking alien ass in Independence Day. So why shouldn’t he take on a real battle with real heroes and a real enemy and show how the country...

World War II epics used to be a dime a dozen. Reliving the United States’ finest hours on the battlefield, filmmakers flocked to the conflict in order to tell tales of heroism. More recently, movies have largely eschewed this topic, unless a director had a more daring take to contribute. Ever since Saving Private Ryan nearly won Best Picture at the Academy Awards, the field of war movies have been shrinking. Now, it’s more the territory of a Dunkirk, where Christopher Nolan could experiment while in a familiar genre. Today brings us Midway, a Roland Emmerich production that is hardly revelatory and offers plenty of action, but little else. This flick is an old fashioned war epic, as mentioned above. For those who don’t know, this is centered on the Battle of Midway, which was the decisive skirmish in the Pacific Theater during World War II. In the...

To enjoy the opening sequence of Roland Emmerich’s latest bloated bomb fest, Midway, you’re best off watching the trailer. The editing of the teaser manages something that Emmerich fails to do in this relentless, seemingly never-ending history lesson – it builds a degree of tension, albeit for 15 seconds.
The sequence depicts the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, replete with bombs landing on ships, explosions, more bombs landing on ships and some more explosions. We’re also introduced to some of the characters; there’s a youngster who is scared, Noo Joisey Ed Skrien as a gum-chewing rogue of a pilot, and soon enough, Patrick Wilson’s furrowed brow and Woody Harrelson’s distracting hair.
Emmerich and writer Wes Tooke haven’t spent too much time on character or dialogue (“That’s the bravest goddamn thing I’ve ever seen!” is standard fare) – this a CGI fest that uses WW2 to justify its existence,...

There’s a scene early in Midway, the latest misfire from director Roland Emmerich, in which we watch terrified sailors aboard the USS Arizona flee from the flames as the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. Everything in the scene--right down to the flames themselves, which seem to hover in front of the men--is so transparently fake, so obviously computer generated, that there is absolutely no sense of the horror, shock, or gravity that a recreation of one of the darkest days in U.S. history should summon up.
Even though his movies are live-action cartoons at best, Emmerich is usually on surer ground when he’s doing alien invasions (Independence Day) or the end of the world (2012). Those kind of scenarios allow for a certain amount of unreality in the vast vistas of...

Roland Emmerich is exactly the right and exactly the wrong filmmaker to make a movie about the Battle of Midway, one of the great turning points in World War II. Few filmmakers can match Emmerich’s eye for excess, and there’s no denying that he fills his film with breathtaking images of aerial action and naval warfare.
But like many of Emmerich’s movies, even the better ones, “Midway” loses sight of the humanity inside its vast vistas of devastation. It’s a giant film with a very small impact.
“Midway” opens with a few brief moments of quiet before, with an undeniably appropriate suddenness, Japan bombs Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Emmerich coats the screen in detailed destruction and sudden heroism, but he races through the day that lives in infamy in record time, with all the pomp of Bay’s “Pearl Harbor” and slightly less of the schmaltz.

The image of “dive-bombing” is an easy one to conjure in your mind’s eye. Yet I can’t say I ever thought seriously about what the experience of dive-bombing might be like — you know, for the one doing the dive-bombing — until I saw “Midway.” In Roland Emmerich’s convulsive, more-authentic-than-not historical combat movie about the battle that took place between American and Japanese Naval forces from June 4 to 7, 1942, near the Midway atoll in the Pacific theater of World War II, we see U.S. bomber pilots, like the fearless flyboy Lt. Dick Best (Ed Skrein), approach a Japanese aircraft carrier from what must be a mile up in the sky. The U.S bombers zoom down at a nearly vertical angle, like guided missiles hurtling toward the ocean, so that as they approach their target they can blow it up with pinpoint accuracy.

At least “Pearl Harbor” had panache. The best thing you can say about Roland Emmerich’s “Midway” — — is that it doesn’t completely dehumanize the Japanese characters. In fact, Admiral Yamamoto and his men are almost (but not quite) three-dimensional compared to the human cartoons on the American side, a bunch of generic lugs who talk like they’re from Brooklyn, act like they want just wandered off the set of “Anchors Aweigh,” and feel like real people in name only.
It’s a shame, because this movie sometimes evinces a genuine respect for men on both sides of the fight, and for the courage required to die for a country whose faraway leaders will never make that sacrifice; “Midway” is nothing if not an aggressively basic reminder that America is only as strong as the people who are willing to protect it with their lives. Alas, those people deserve...

Lionsgate has set a Veterans Day weekend release date of Nov. 8, 2019, for Roland Emmerich’s World War II action movie “Midway,” opening on the same date as the 25th James Bond film.
The slot is also already occupied by Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” in addition to MGM’s Bond movie. MGM is expected to vacate the date since the project currently doesn’t have a director following Danny Boyle’s recent departure.
Patrick Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, and Mandy Moore are starring in “Midway.” Wilson will play Edwin Layton, the rear admiral in the U.S. Navy who was part of the intelligence team that correctly pinpointed the location of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s attacking fleet near Midway Atoll in 1942. The damage to the Japanese fleet was so extensive that it never recovered and military historians regard the battle as a turning point in the war.

USA Network has brought the curtain down on fantasy drama thriller “Colony” after three seasons.
The series starring Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies has seen viewership declines through its third season. “Colony” hailed from Legendary Television and Universal Cable Productions.
“Colony” started off strong in its first season. The series revolved around a family trying to survive after an alien invasion of Earth forces them into an underground resistance movement.
Carlton Cuse and Ryan Condal created the series and served as executive producers. The project marked a reunion for Cuse, the co-showrunner of “Lost,” and Holloway, who made his name in the ensemble of the ABC thriller. Condal and exec producer Wes Tooke served as showrunners for the final season.
Deadline was first to report news of “Colony’s” cancellation.

Exclusive: Colony premiered at Comic-Con in 2015 and has had a continuous presence at the fan confab including last year when the cast and producers teased big Season 3 changes. Wednesday’s Season 3 finale will serve as the series finale.

Midway has director Roland Emmerich putting the historic World War II battle through his disaster-movie lens.
Midway will provide yet another hub for ostentatious cinematic disaster sequences from director Roland Emmerich, the industry’s premiere weaver of wanton world-wrecking, though this time – akin to Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor – to the backdrop of World War II.
With the title’s obvious reference to the post-Pearl-Harbor bellwether battle of the war’s Pacific theater, the film will dramatize said event with quite the cast, including Woody Harrelson, Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Jake Weber, Aaron Eckhart and Dennis Quaid – all of whom play fact-based figures in the monumental conflagration.
