Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel is a movie star. "The Marvels" has been cited as another sign of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's fall from dominance, but everyone loves young actor Iman Vellani as this spunky heroine. /Film even named Kamala the best movie hero of 2023 and proclaimed her the future of the MCU.
Of course, Kamala comes from Marvel Comics and was co-created by G. Willow Wilson, Sana Amanat, Stephen Wacker, Adrian Alphona, and Jamie McKelvie. The comics made a bizarre move of synergy in 2023; between Kamala's Disney+ show "Ms. Marvel" and the theatrical run of "The Marvels," she heroically dies in "Amazing Spider-Man" #26 (by Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr.), published in May 2023.
Wells' "Amazing Spider-Man" isn't exactly a fan-favorite (the stink of breaking up Peter and Mj has carried across his run) and this was a low point. It was the cheapest of cheap melodrama and Kamala perished while pulling guest star duty.

This post contains spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #26.
In 1940, Mlj Publishers had a problem. Their standout artist Jack Cole (best known as the creator of Plastic Man) had left the company, abandoning the hit series Pep Comics and its star the Comet. Without Cole’s pencils, the Comet didn’t pop in the same way, and the company needed something drastic to save its sales. So in Pep Comics #17, a thug guns the Comet down, inspiring his brother to become a new hero called the Hangman.
The first superhero death in comic books set the trend for all that followed. Pep killed off the Comet not for any story reason, but because they wanted to goose sales. And not only does his death launch another hero, but he doesn’t stay dead for good — Mlj (now Archie Comics) brought back the Comet in the 1960s and the 1980s, eventually licensing him to DC Comics.

With the first two epic episodes of Ms. Marvel now streaming on Disney+ and the next ready to drop, we thought we would deliver even more scoop on this very special show.

An avid gamer and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, Kamala is a Super Hero megafan with an oversized imagination— particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel. Kamala feels like she doesn’t fit in at school and sometimes even at home—that is until she gets superpowers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life gets better with superpowers, right?

It’s not every day a superhero texts you. But that’s exactly what happened during “Ms. Marvel” star Iman Vellani’s interview with Variety.
As the 19-year-old Canadian reflected on what it’s been like having “Captain Marvel” star Brie Larson as a mentor during her introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe — where she plays Kamala Khan, the Muslim teen hero she once cosplayed as — another Marvel star, “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” lead Simu Liu, sent her a text.
“Okay, life is weird,” Vellani giggled, looking at the notification. “It’s super weird that the same people I look up to are now acknowledging my existence. Like, what do you do with that? I don’t know.”

Iman Vellani and her MCU character have lived parallel lives
Paralleling the character she portrays, 19-year-old Canadian Iman Vellani is an earnest and talented teenage superfan who has been called up to the big leagues. With “Moon Knight” all wrapped up last week, the next big Marvel Studios show on the horizon will be “Ms. Marvel” which comes from head writer Bisha K. Ali and is an adaptation of the 2014 comics by G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona.
Many fans have noticed in promotional images and in footage that Iman Vellani’s MCU version of Kamala Khan doesn’t have her traditional stretchy abilities from the comics, instead replaced with some energy-based power, which many liken her to “Green Lantern,” an iconic DC Comics superhero that gets his energy-based abilities from a cosmic ring.

Exclusive: Comic book and graphic novel publisher Idw has unveiled nine new original comic book projects set for release beginning in July as part of a new initiative. While the focus is on creating new comic book IP, following publishing of the comics, the Idw Entertainment Group will work to potentially develop the IP for film, television and other entertainment mediums the way the company has done in the past with such titles as Wynonna Earp and Locke & Key.
Reflecting genres including crime thriller, supernatural horror, science fiction and epic fantasy, the projects hail from New York Times bestselling authors, top industry artists and writers, as well as newcomers, including Scott Snyder, G. Willow Wilson and Stephen Graham Jones, among others. Additionally, Idw has additional projects underway for 2023 and beyond, including a comic book series by Academy Award–winning director, screenwriter, novelist, and showrunner John Ridley and several original graphic novels aimed at middle grade and YA audiences.
Beginning with Scott Snyder’s Dark Spaces: Wildfire in July (see details below), Idw will be publishing the projects monthly.
“A year ago we gave ourselves a mission: to make Idw the destination for premier talent and rising stars,” says Mark Doyle, editorial director of Originals. “This is an unprecedented moment in Idw’s history, and there’s been a tremendous team effort from our creative and editorial teams and everyone at the company to develop a stellar slate of original stories—and we’re having a blast doing it!”
Here is a trailer for Idw’s new initiative:
“Throughout our history, Idw has provided a supportive environment for passionate creators to pursue their artistic vision, taking form as such beloved titles as 30 Days of Night, Locke & Key, V Wars, Canto, October Faction, and Wynonna Earp, just to name a few,” says publisher Nachie Marsham. “Our new Originals editorial division, spearheaded by Mark Doyle, reflects our commitment to building upon that legacy. More than ever before, we are reaching out to the creative community, welcoming fresh ideas that span a diverse range of genres, and offering audiences wild new worlds to explore.”
The first nine projects are:
Dark Spaces: Wildfire, a thriller series written by Scott Snyder with art by Hayden Sherman, follows a group of female inmate firefighters deep into the smoldering California hills, where their desperate heist of a burning mansion will lead them to the score of a lifetime…or a deadly trap!
Trve Kvlt, a five-issue miniseries written by Scott Bryan Wilson with art by Liana Kangas, introduces Marty Tarantella, a down-on-his-luck loser whose last-ditch scheme to escape a lifetime of fast-food service sets him on a collision course with a cult of violent, Devil-worshiping lunatics!
Crashing, a five-issue miniseries written by Matthew Klein with art by Morgan Beem, throws open the doors of an emergency room filled with casualties of a superhuman war, where Rose Osler, a doctor on her own path of addiction and recovery, faces the most dangerous day of her medical career.
Earthdivers, an ongoing series written by Stephen Graham Jones with art by Davide Gianfelice, unites four Indigenous survivors in an apocalyptic near future as they embark on a bloody, one-way mission to save the world by traveling back in time to kill Christopher Columbus and prevent the creation of America.
Dead Seas, a six-issue miniseries written by Cavan Scott with art by Nick Brokenshire, transforms a cynical convict into a reluctant hero when he’s trapped on a sinking prison ship swarming with ghosts. Can he unite desperate criminals, pirates, and brutal guards as they try to escape a watery grave?
Golgotha Motor Mountain, a five-issue miniseries written by Matthew Erman and Lonnie Nadler with art by Ryan Lee, is a high-octane, redneck motor massacre about two meth-cooking brothers and their attempt to make it home in one piece as all manner of cosmic alien horrors are hot on their trail.
Arca, an original graphic novel written by Van Jensen with art by Jesse Lonergan, leaves a dying Earth behind as billionaires establish a luxurious new society out among the stars, tended to by teenage indentured servants. But one girl discovers that the good life promised for their years of servitude was a lie…
The Sin Bin, a six-issue miniseries written by Robbie Thompson with art by Molly Murakami, hits the road with washed-up hockey player Dale “Dukes” Duquesne, who moonlights as a monster hunter during away games with his daughter, Cat, in tow, hoping to find her mother’s killer.
The Hunger and the Dusk, a twelve-issue storyline written by G. Willow Wilson with art by Chris Wildgoose, upends an age-old conflict between humans and orcs by introducing a new, deadlier species. Fragile alliances form—and unexpected romances blossom—as former enemies wade into battle together to save their two races.

Laurel Marsden, who starred in Quibi’s Survive, will play Zoe Zimmer in Disney+’s upcoming Marvel series Ms. Marvel, Deadline has confirmed. The series follows teenage hero Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani).
Zimmer is something of frenemy to Ms. Marvel; a popular girl at Coles Academic High, the superhero first saves her in the Hudson River. Zimmer dates the school’s ‘it’ athlete Josh Richardson. The character made her debut in 2014’s Ms. Marvel No. 3 from scribe G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona.
Bisha K. Ali is head writer on the series. Bad Boys for Life filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah direct along with two-time Oscar doc short winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and The Walking Dead director Meera Menon.
Ms. Marvel is set to drop later this year. Cameras are already rolling in Atlanta.

To say the Disney Investor Day was a big deal would be an understatement. In addition to announcing multiple new films and projects, Lucasfilm and Marvel offered up confirmations and announcements for the future of their respective franchises. And for Marvel, that included introducing some new superheroes to the mix. Like Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel.
Initially announced at San Diego Comic-Con last year, Kamala will head her own Disney+ series that will follow her adventures as Marvel’s first Pakistani-American superhero. Kevin Feige confirmed that newcomer Iman Vellani will play the titular superhero, who since making her comics debut in 2014, has become one of Marvel’s most beloved characters.
But some of you might still be asking who Kamala is and, more importantly, why her story is one that Marvel wants to spotlight. Since nothing is announced accidentally, we know that whoever is joining the McU will be important to its future.

Carol Danvers is bringing two fan-favorites on board for the highly anticipated sequel to Captain Marvel. Ms. Marvel – who holds Danvers’s previous moniker – and Monica Rambeau – the first woman to hold the title Captain Marvel – will both join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kevin Feige announced the news during the news during the Disney Investor Day call.
Monica will make her debut when Teyonah Parris (Dear White People) plays her in WandaVision, the mysterious and highly stylized Disney+ show that seems to be taking on a version of the “House of M” comic storyline, while also taking some cues from I Love Lucy and The Brady Bunch. Notably for Carol Danvers fans, “House of M” is when Carol first truly saw herself as a hero. She retained her memories from the alternate universe, and the experience inspired her to get her life together and become the mighty Captain Marvel we all know and love.

When Disney+ was unveiled, we were promised that it’d be the home of exclusive McU shows. Well, it’s almost been a year since the streaming service launched and there’s still no sign of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki and the rest. Disney and Marvel Studios are forgiven for not being able to predict the Covid-19 pandemic that wreaked havoc upon the entertainment industry, but either way, it’s been a very long wait.
New Disney+ Marvel content has been confirmed, though, and it’s hitting the service as soon as this November. This will be in the form of documentary series Marvel’s 616, which will “explore Marvel’s rich legacy of pioneering characters, creations and storytelling.” Each episode of the show will explore corners of the Marvel Universe, with the ‘616’ in the title an indication that they’ll be focusing on the long running comics continuity.

This Marvel’s Avengers article contains spoilers.
Marvel’s Avengers, the new superhero action game from Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics and publisher Square Enix, sees the return of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to modern platforms. But while the new adventure might let gamers and fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe alike take control of the team as seen in the movies, there’s one character who’s captivated players above all others. I’m of course talking about young Kamala Khan, the Avengers superfan who becomes an inspiring superhero in her own right.
While the game opens with the Avengers at the height of their powers and popularity, it’s really young Kamala (voiced beautifully by Sandra Saad), destined to become the superhero Ms. Marvel, who is at the center of this story. We first meet her in the opening A-Day sequence when terrorists attack San Francisco and unleash...

Batman: Black and White is an almost 25-year-old anthology series that gave titans of the industry, brilliant artists and writers, a chance to go wild and show off what they could do with the Dark Knight and his world. While the series has been around since 1996, Batman: Black and White has been on hiatus since 2014, but that’s about to change in December.
The anthology returns with a new volume on Dec. 8, as announced by DC Comics. The oversized book will run for six issues and each 48-page issue will feature new short stories from an incredible collection of creators. The first issue features covers from long-time Batman artist and Dark Nights: Death Metalhead Greg Capullo; a Talia cover from Peach Momoko; and one from “The Black Glove”‘s Jh Williams.

The Netflix adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman” will be slightly different than the original comic book series. While discussing the incredibly popular graphic novel and audio adaptation on the DC FanDome panel with Dirk Maggs, G. Willow Wilson and Michael Sheen, Gaiman revealed the status for the hotly anticipated upcoming Netflix adaptation that was announced in 2019.
When pressed for details on the long-awaited series, Gaiman first stated the obvious; due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, everything has been on pause. However, the author revealed that he had been using that time to get the script as “close to perfect as we can.” A task he admits, was rather fun.
“Right now as the universal pause button is starting to come off, we’re starting to cast again,” Gaiman said. “I’m getting these inspiring and wonderful emails with production designs with places that I’d only ever seen in the comics before,...

Fans hoping for major DC news in lieu of an actual San Diego Comic-Con are definitely going to get just that at DC FanDome, a digital event designed to be watched at home like a real con.
Originally set up as one epic night of panels and reveals, DC announced that it will be splitting FanDome into two separate and distinct events: Hall of Heroes, which will be held in late August, and WatchVerse in mid-September.
The August date still holds most of the big-ticket items. It’s billed by DC as “an epic world designed personally by Jim Lee featuring special programming, panels and exclusive reveals from a wide variety of films, TV series, games, comics and more.” Functionally, it’s the Hall H of FanDome.

DC’s new comics solicitations for November, 2020, were full of surprises, but there may not be a bigger shock than the announcement that they would be publishing Alan Moore’s pitch for Twilight of the Superheroes.
DC is releasing DC Through the ’80s: The End of Eras on December 15th. It’s a compilation of several pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths stories, including Moore and Curt Swan’s legendary “What Ever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?” Detective Comics #500, The Brave and the Bold #200, and several others. The hardcover will also include essays on this era of comics from Elliot S! Maggin, Andy Kubert, J.M. DeMatteis, and others, alongside Moore’s mega-crossover pitch.
Twilight of the Superheroes was Moore’s attempt, in 1987, to clean up what he saw as the mess that was created by Crisis. It was a mechanism to reintroduce a version of the multiverse, and an effort to...

Although at heart when I choose and read my comics I am a superhero guy, I do enjoy dipping into indie stuff and non-superhero stuff along the way. Variety is the spice of life after all. Although Superman, Spider-Man, Captain America, Batman and co. have been companions along the way on my comic book journey, so has 2000Ad, Dave Sim’s Cerebus, most of Marvel’s Epic line, Grimjack, Sable and DC’s Vertigo. All of them bring something different to the table, and that’s why I love comics. Something for everyone. I was as disappointed as everyone else when DC disbanded it’s Vertigo line, as in recent times that variety of choice has been withering away. Vertigo had always been a chance for writers and artists to show a different side to their storytelling.

‘Marvel’s 616’ at Comic-Con: Disney Plus Docuseries Highlights Unsung Women, Wacky Marvel Characters
Usually a massive presence at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Entertainment is largely sitting out this year’s virtual iteration of the 50-year-old fan convention, Comic-Con@Home. That is, save for a panel on “Marvel’s 616,” a Disney Plus docuseries that covers the history of Marvel Comics through the lens of a series of individual filmmakers.
Actors Gillian Jacobs (“Community”) and Paul Scheer (“Black Monday”) joined the panel to share their experiences directing episodes for the series, the first time either had made a documentary film. Jacobs and Scheer joined executive producer Sarah Amos (also vice president of development and production for new media at Marvel) and executive producer Jason Sterman (whose production company Supper Club made the series) to talk with moderator Angélique Roché about their differing approaches to their episodes.
Sterman explained that “Marvel’s 616” was designed to feel as tonally and thematically disparate as the vast universe of Marvel Comics,...

G. Willow Wilson looks back at her time writing Wonder Woman.
Wonder Woman has been inspiring readers and saving the world since 1941. Over the decades the Themysciran Princess has been a pillar of the DC Universe, her adventures and bravery a moral compass in an often bleak, grim, and gritty world. Like all of comics' longest running characters, Diana Prince has been helmed by many different creative teams, and most recently writer G. Willow Wilson took the reins of the character alongside an impressive roster of artists like Cary Nord, Tom Derenick, and more. As Wilson exits the title to head over to the world of Sandman and the Dreaming, Den of Geek sat down to talk to the co-creator of Ms. Marvel about her time writing the iconic hero and the lessons that it taught her.

Wonder Woman #750 features an all-star lineup of talent.
Action Comics and Detective Comics went back to legacy numbering for huge milestones. In January, the Trinity is complete, as it's Wonder Woman's turn.
DC announced a giant anniversary issue - Wonder Woman #750 - coming January 22nd. It will be a 96 page comic, and like Action Comics and Detective Comics #1000, it will be a bit of a short story jam session. However, unlike those two thousandth issues, Wonder Woman #750 mixes in some newer talent to go with the classic Diana creators who are almost fundamentally required by the universe to be in here.
The book will feature new stories from Greg Rucka and Gail Simone, arguably the two most accomplished and important Wonder Woman writers still making comics today. Rucka wrote Diana's Rebirth arc that brought her up to date in the new continuity in addition to fleshing out...

Fans of DC Comics and Sandman can sleep easy because the realm of the Dreaming is in good hands.
At the DC House of Horror panel at New York Comic Con, it was announced that the new creative team of Sandman Presents: The Dreaming will be none other than G. Willow Wilson and artist Nick Robles. Sandman Presents: The Dreaming launched a year ago with writer Simon Spurrier and artists Bilquis Evely, Matt Lopes, and Simon Bowland. But with Spurrier departing The Dreaming to write Sandman Presents: Hellblazer, Wilson and Robles will soon take up residence as proprietors of Dream’s realm.
Wilson told an appropriately surreal story on how she found out that Neil Gaiman and DC were handing her the keys of the Dreaming.
"I was on book tour for The Bird King," Wilson told the Nycc crowd. “Chris Conroy called me to put in contact with Neil Gaiman.

The person most responsible for the creation of the Kamala Khan version of Ms. Marvel is worried that the upcoming live-action “Ms. Marvel” on Disney+ is going to have a hard time depicting her super-powered abilities.
“I think there’re some characters who are very much set up for the big screen; they’re very naturally sort of cinematic. But with Ms. Marvel, we really weren’t interested in creating something that had very obvious film potential,” writer G. Willow Wilson told Polygon. “She’s got very comic booky powers. God bless them trying to bring that to live-action. I don’t know how that’s going to work out in a way that doesn’t look really creepy.”
Khan’s powers include the ability to enlarge or shrink any part of herself she wants. She is the second superhero to use the “Ms. Marvel” moniker, adopting the name as a tribute to Carol Danvers,...

Marvel Studios is breaking ground with its upcoming Ms. Marvel series for Disney+. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Bisha K. Ali has been tapped to write the series and act as showrunner for the series centered on Kamala Khan, a teenage Pakistani-Muslim living in New Jersey.
In 2014, Kamala Khan made history in the comics by being the first Muslim Marvel character to headline her own title. The comic book by G. Willow Wilson focused on the Muslim American diaspora as the Muslim teenager went on her superhero adventures within the larger Marvel universe. The title would go on to win a ...
