Amazon MGM Studios has closed a three-year first-look film deal with Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories following the rousing success of his movie Road House on Prime Video, which was the most watched original movie for the studio ever with 50 million global viewers in the pic’s first two weeks.
Under the actor’s new deal, Amazon MGM will have a first look on narrative features Nine Stories intends to produce for both theatrical and streaming.
Prior to the Doug Liman-directed Road House, Gyllenhaal made the movie Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant with Amazon MGM. The pic was released last year in theaters.
Oscar- and Tony-nominated Gyllenhaal founded Nine Stories in 2015 with Riva Marker, a fully capitalized production company dedicated to working with visionary storytellers in all fields. Most recently, Nine Stories produced Antoine Fuqua’s The Guilty, starring Gyllenhaal, which was Netflix’s No. 1 film for more than three weeks.

Under the pact, Amazon MGM Studios will have first dibs on narrative features that the actor’s production company makes. The deal includes theatrical, as well as streaming releases.

The film debuted on March 21 and has reached over 50 million worldwide viewers on the service. Prior to that, Gyllenhaal starred in “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant,” which the studio released theatrically last year.

Exclusive: Six years after terrorists detonated two bombs near the Boston Marathon finish line taking three lives and causing hundreds of injuries, Propagate Content/Electus will make the documentary series Maximum Harm, based on Boston-based investigative journalist Michele McPhee’s book. Aboard to direct are Charles Ferguson, who won an Oscar for the 2008 financial meltdown dissection The Inside Job and his partner Shimon Dotan, who won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize director for Hot House.
McPhee’s book recaptured an unimaginable outcome to Patriots Day, when the city of Boston screeches to a halt annually for celebrations capped by the Boston Marathon. In her book, McPhee leaned heavily into the allegation that lead terrorist Tamerlan Tsarnaev was an FBI informant gone rogue, and questioned whether he and brother Dzhokhar actually built the bombs they planted 210 yards apart near the finish of the Boston Marathon. Before he agreed to resurrect a dormant horror icon in Michael Myers, writer-director David Gordon Green was busy directing Jake Gyllenhaal in Stronger, the true-life Boston Marathon drama in which Gyllenhaal takes on the role of Jeff Bauman.
It proved to be a raw and deeply nuanced performance for which the actor drew near-unanimous praise, but it was his legwork behind the scenes that helped alert Jamie Lee Curtis to the long-rumored Halloween sequel that had just set up shop over at Blumhouse.
At the time, David Gordon Green was in the process of drafting up a script alongside Vice Principals duo Jeff Fradley and Danny McBride, but it was Gyllenhaal, the actor currently linked to the role of Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home, who set up a meeting between Curtis and David Gordon Green.
Here’s how the actress explains it:
Jake and I have been friends since he was a young boy.

As casting on Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 begins to heat, British tabloid The Sun (h/t The Express; McU Exchange) has uncovered new intel which suggests Marvel Studios has its crosshairs placed on Jake Gyllenhaal for the plum, villainous role – presumably at the expense of Ryan Gosling (First Man), who has since pulled out of negotiations.
If true, it’ll mark the moment when Gyllenhall goes full circle, given he was previously up for the role of Spider-Man all those years ago before it ultimately fell into the hands of Tobey Macguire. The Division star was also among those linked with The Batman, though it appears Matt Reeves’ standalone pic may well herald the return of Batfleck, after all.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures and Amblin will c0-finance Bernstein, a film about iconic composer Leonard Bernstein that Bradley Cooper will star in and direct, and he will write the script with Josh Singer, who shared the Best Original Screenplay Oscar with Tom McCarthy for Spotlight. Cooper, through his Joint Effort banner, will produce with Fred Berner, Amy Durning, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese. Paramount/Amblin have confirmed and said they are finalizing exclusive rights with the Bernstein estate.

David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman have moved their Mandeville Films from Disney to Universal. The duo is coming off the $300 million-grossing Wonder, the billion-dollar grosser Beauty and the Beast, the Jake Gyllenhaal-starrer Stronger about Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman, The Fighter and The Muppets. Mandeville is in pre-production on The Aeronauts for Amazon Studios.
Hoberman was at Disney 20 years, first as a top exec before partnering with Lieberman as producer. Disney is so locked in with its silo system, it is hard for lot-based producers there to get slots, which is why they’ve made so many of their movies elsewhere. Universal should provide more opportunity.
Deal was made by production president Peter Cramer and Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley.

Exclusive: In what shapes up as another very strong Cannes title for next week, Jake Gyllenhaal is set to produce and star as Leonard Bernstein in The American, with Cary Joji Fukunaga directing and producing. Based on the autobiography of Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman, “Stronger” dives into potentially melodramatic territory to deliver a surprisingly grounded and unvarnished look at a story of survival through unimaginable pain. Director David Gordon Green takes his first stab at real-life material, directing Jake Gyllenhaal in a riveting performance that further cements his status as one of the best actors of his generation.
“We set off to make a movie that was as honest as it could be,” Gyllenhaal told IndieWire in an interview for our Awards Season Spotlight series. “As honest as pretending a real-life story can be. To understand pain in a way, but to understand the triumph through pain.”

This Boston Marathon drama attempts to portray a survivor’s difficult emotional journey even as it waves Old Glory
The story of a survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing who became a symbol of the indomitable spirit of the city, Stronger is a film that tries to have it both ways. On the one hand, the picture explores the emotional toll on everyman Jeff Bauman (Jake Gyllenhaal), who finds himself celebrated as a figure of hope, simply by virtue of having survived. On the other, with its swelling score and obligatory shots of noble, fluttering Us flags, the film buys into the hero narrative wholesale.
With his huge haunted eyes, Gyllenhaal does a decent job of capturing the conflict of a man who can’t admit that he is struggling for fear of letting down his family and the city that supports him. Headed by Miranda Richardson as his boozy mother,...

This story first appeared in the Actors/Directors/Screenwriters issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine. An Lapd officer. A troubled boxer. An ambulance-chasing tabloid journalist. An American mountaineer who climbed Everest. These are some of the roles Jake Gyllenhaal has played during his remarkable run in recent years — but none of them compare to the role he played in David Gordon Green’s “Stronger,” the actor said. “I’ve never played a role like this before,” Gyllenhaal told TheWrap of his portrayal of Jeff Bauman, a deli worker who had both of his legs amputated after he was injured in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

Ben Affleck out, Jake Gyllenhaal in?
That’s the latest allegation from John Campea, who claims the current Caped Crusader will be relieved of his crimefighting duties soon after the launch of Justice League. His successor? Jake Gyllenhaal, who has allegedly been shortlisted to headline The Batman – and, by effect, a whole new trilogy – under the stewardship of Matt Reeves.
Gyllenhaal has long been rumored for the role of Gotham’s Dark Knight, having just missed out on Batman and Spider-Man in the past. Indeed, the Oscar-nominated actor has never once strayed into the world of costumed crusaders and superheroes – unless you’re counting the tour-de-force performance of Stronger, in which he played Boston Marathon bombing survivor, Jeff Bauman.
As for The Batman, evidence continues to mount that Matt Reeves is working to replace Ben Affleck in the title role, similar to how his page-one rewrite ostensibly removed Deathstroke from the Gotham-centric spinoff altogether.

Four years have passed since bombs went off at the finish line of the Boston Marathon that turned then-27-year old Jeff Bauman into a double amputee. In that time, Bauman’s inspiring story – which for many symbolizes Boston’s strength in bouncing back from the tragedy – has been captured in a book, which was then adapted into screenplay and now, the movie “Stronger,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Bauman. During that time, Bauman’s recovery – physically, emotionally and mentally – did not happen all at once, nor was it a linear process. In fact, according to Gyllenhaal, Bauman was in a dramatically different headspace at the end of shooting “Stronger” compared to when he saw an early version of the movie.

David Gordon Green’s Stronger is based on the true story of Jeff Bauman, who became a symbol of national hope after surviving the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. The screenplay was written by John Pollono, who adapted the book by Bauman and Bret Witter.
The movie, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Bauman and Tatiana Maslany as his girlfriend Erin, does not shy away from the physical hardships of Bauman after he lost both legs above the knee. But it also shows his mental struggle with Ptsd after the bombing, a topic not frequently explored in film.

Jeff Bauman was one of the people who survived the Boston Marathon bombing. Due to that incident, he lost both of his legs but managed to make a recovery with the help of a wide range of people. In 2014, he released a memoir about the experience called Stronger, which has since been turned into a movie of the same name with Jake Gyllenhaal playing him. Here are five things that you may or may not have known about Jeff Bauman: At the Marathon to Cheer for His Girlfriend In 2013, Bauman was standing at the finish line for the

Stronger isn't the first movie about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, but the film, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal as survivor Jeff Bauman, focuses more on Bauman and his family's effort to overcome a tragedy and move forward in the months after a traumatic event.
"I think it goes beyond the headlines," Tatiana Maslany, who plays Bauman's on-again, off-again girlfriend Erin Hurley in the movie, told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of a recent screening. "Jeff was sort of touted as this hero and that was something that was uncomfortable for him to carry, and really it's about these individual...

As Megyn Kelly’s “Megyn Kelly Today” continued in its second week on air, the NBC host cut off guest Tom Brokaw as he brought up the National Rifle Association. Brokaw later said that he couldn’t hear the host trying to toss to commercial, but people on Twitter are criticizing the moment. Tuesday’s broadcast featured a panel discussion about the deadly massacre in Las Vegas on Sunday night, including renowned journalist and former NBC News anchor Brokaw as well as Dr. Sue Varma, Jeff Bauman and Evy Poumpouras as guests. A man in the audience asked, “We’re constantly bombarded with the news.

In Stronger, Jake Gyllenhaal plays Jeff Bauman who lost both his legs in the Boston Marathon bombing. While the movie looks to be a very serious and touching movie of a man's rehabilitation after losing his legs, Gyllenhaal might play the role with a tad less humor than the actual Bauman who screws with him the entire interview. Obviously, the whole thing is a skit, but that doesn't make it any less funny!

In the profile, Jake admitted to being "nervous" upon meeting the 31-year-old, saying, "It was initially awkward. Inevitably, when you're dealing with a real-life story, there's the knowledge that nothing you can do will ever match what [Jeff] went through." Related44 Pictures of Jake That Will Have You Saying "Gyllenhaal-alujah!" In addition to sharing his thoughts on being set up on dates, Jake also opened up about masculinity and the ever-changing ideas of what it means to "be a man." The 36-year-old, who attended the Women's March on Washington with older sister Maggie in January, also shared the biggest lessons he's learned from the women in his life, including his mother, playwright Naomi Foner. Check out his insightful (and swoon-worthy) quotes below.

Celebration turned to tragedy in an instant in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Two homemade bombs took the lives of three innocent souls and injured several hundred people, including more than a dozen who lost limbs. Jeff Bauman (Jake Gyllenhaal) lost his legs as he waited at the finishing line for his girlfriend Erin Hurley (Tatiana Maslany) to complete the marathon. But that was only the beginning of the story that is told in Stronger, which follows Jeff's attempts to walk again and...

An Oscar movie could hit theaters at any time during the year -- as far as the rules are concerned, it only needs to be released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 to be eligible -- but everyone knows that all of the true contenders arrive in the last quarter of the year.
I suppose some Academy-worthy movies have already been released: Dunkirk, right? The Big Sick and Get Out less likely, but perhaps! I guess some people believe Wonder Woman could really get a Best Picture nomination.... So, instead of considering this our first round of Oscar predictions, think of it as a Ones to Watch list to prepare you as studios start showing off their films that could earn noms at next year's Academy Awards. (Which are still five months away, Fyi, on March 4, 2018.)

Just as Oscar voters rewarded Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, and many others for roles that demanded body-shifting training or weight change, they also lean into performers who limit their mobility or twist themselves under duress. Perhaps the most infamous example is Daniel Day Lewis’s shoot-long stint in a wheelchair as cerebral palsy victim Christy Brown in “My Left Foot,” which earned Lewis his first Oscar and cost him two broken ribs.
Eddie Redmayne could barely articulate his dialogue as Als survivor Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything,” and took home the 2015 Oscar. Mental hardship counts, too: Tom Hanks won as a mentally disabled hero in “Forrest Gump” and Julianne Moore won as an early-onset Alzheimer’s victim in “Still Alice.”

Chicago – The second major film about the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing (after last year’s “Patriots Day”) is “Stronger,” and it wisely focuses on one individual rather than the bigger event. Jake Gyllenhaal portrays Jeff Bauman, a spectator near the explosion that lost both his legs.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
There are two elements that position this film above Lifetime-Movie-of-the-Week territory… the unflinching look at a man recovering from losing both his legs while not having the resources that other people might have, and Jake Gyllenhaal’s interpretation of that situation. Gyllenhaal is an actor’s actor, using his instrument as a means to communicate beyond the dialogue. I don’t know how Jeff Bauman is in real life, but if I had to guess based on Gyllenhaal’s portrayal, it would be accurate to the real guy. Gyllenhaal’s Jeff never panders, capitulates to false heroism or steps away from the negative parts of recovery,...

Have patience watching director David Gordon Green’s film Stronger, which captures real-life Boston native Jeff Bauman (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) as he’s caught in the 2013 Marathon bombing. After a rickety start, Green relaxes into a nice rhythm and delivers an almost extinct creature: a true adult movie drama.
The first few scenes of Stronger come on a little, ahem, strong. They’re written to show what a great guy Bauman is (he cuts out from work so he and his lucky beer can help the Red Sox win, he stands up for his gay boss), and Green has all the actors pushing too hard. The initial scene where we meet Bauman’s family (including mom Miranda Richardson and girlfriend Tatiana Maslany) in a bar reeks of Boston cliché. It’s a very tricky thing, honestly capturing that lower-middle-class Beantown language and attitude, and Green overplays...

Inspired by a true story, Stronger follows the journey of Jeff Bauman, who lost both of his legs in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, as he adjusts to his new life and becomes the symbol for fighting against terrorism.
The film is largely based on Bauman’s book by the same title, and shows the aftermath of the bombing in a way it has not yet been seen onscreen (Patriots Day, starring Mark Wahlberg, focused on the event from multiple perspectives). Stronger, which will hit theaters Sept. 22, has already started generating award season buzz for its star, Jake Gyllenhaal.
