Malum is, according to its press release “a bold and expanded reimagining of the 2014 horror cult classic, Last Shift”. I considered revisiting Last Shift before watching Malum because while I remembered the basic plot and that I really liked the first hour then being let down by the final act, I didn’t recall a lot of the details. Welcome Villain Films presents two fright-fests, but tired tricks, bad acting and some head-banging repetition leads to hackneyed hokum
New horror-focused studio Welcome Villain are aiming to be the next Blumhouse, but judging by this double bill of early releases it could be a long road. Both aim to maximise low-budget returns by restricting themselves to a single location – an approach that worked very well recently for filling station ordeal Night of the Hunted, not to mention of course the apex of horror, The Shining. But in truth neither of these makes strong use of its chosen locale, and both are tired, borderline exhausted deployments of the audience-prodding, jump-scare bag of tricks.
Malum (★★☆☆☆), by director Anthony Diblasi, at least gives its backstory a bit of welly. A reworking of his 2014 film Last Shift, it sees rookie police officer Jessica (Jessica Sula) choose to work a solo shift at the old...

Genre icons Dee Wallace – whose credits include The Hills Have Eyes, The Howling, Cujo, and Critters – and Felissa Rose – who will always be remembered for playing Angela in Sleepaway Camp – have signed on to star in the horror film The Boy from Below alongside Richie Ramone, who was the drummer for The Ramones from 1983 to 1987. Directed by Tory Jones, The Boy from Below is described as being a “retelling” of Jones’ 2017 film The Wicked One (which previously received a sequel titled Wicked Ones).
Jones had this to say about the project: “In 2014, I set out to create a new slasher character reminiscent of the horror heavyweights of films past. This would lead to the creation of The Wicked One, a corrupted teen who transforms into a hulking psychopath in a scarecrow mask. It would take two years, but finally The Wicked One premiered at Fright Night Film Festival 2016 to a...

Mutilator 2, writer/director Buddy Cooper’s long-awaited follow-up to his 1984 slasher The Mutilator (pick up a copy Here), is ready to make its way out into the world. The movie even screened at Joe Bob Briggs’ latest drive-in Jamboree event back in October, and received an “audience favorite” award there. And yet it still hasn’t secured a distribution deal. Cooper confirmed this on Facebook, where he wrote, “We are still searching for distribution. It might help if a few fans asked their favorite streaming service or theater when they would be showing Mutilator 2. If enough people show an interest, I feel like a distributor would be willing to help get it out to everyone.“
The fact that Shudder hasn’t swooped in to release this as a Shudder Original is shocking, given that they’ve not only had The Mutilator on their streaming service, but even had...

"When the secret's are out, you often discover who your friends are..." Dark Sky Films has revealed the trailer for an indie slasher horror film titled Time's Up, made by filmmaker L.C. Holt. This premiered last year at the Popcorn Frights Film Festival and will be getting a release later in 2023. On New Year's Eve, a faculty party for teachers at an idyllic Maine high school, still reeling from the suicide death of a bullied student, goes horribly wrong when an unexpected guest arrives with an unusual request – participate in a scavenger hunt or die. The assailant is hell bent on revealing their darkest secrets. And when twelve o'clock arrives... heads will begin to roll. This stars Damian Maffei, Hannah Fierman, L.C. Holt, Jonathan Tiersten, Kamarra Cole, Madison Edmunds, Tyler Senatore, Kate Kiddo, and Chaney Morrow. This stoic "Father Time" masked killer looks funny, especially with the ominous voiceover from the trailer.

Review: Reboots are nothing new these days, but rarely do you find a filmmaker who remakes his own film released not even ten years prior. Anthony Diblasi, a protege of Clive Barker who has produced or directed three adaptations of the British author’s writing, released Last Shift in 2014. The little-seen flick, written by Diblasi and Scott Polley, followed a rookie cop witnessing supernatural events in a police station.

In a rare turn of events, director/co-writer Anthony Diblasi gives a new update to his own 2014 horror film Last Shift with Malum. Diblasi reunites with Last Shift co-writer Scott Poiley, creating an expanded story that strengthens the original narrative and offers even bloodier occult mayhem. “With this new film, we really wanted it to stand on its own, and giving it a new title absolutely does that,” says filmmaker Anthony Diblasi. “The name ‘Malum’ is not only a major element of the plot and how things unfold, but that word, in some of the oldest languages in history, means ‘evil’ and ‘an offense against right or law,’ which seamlessly ties into the twisted,...

Fangoria has unveiled the trailer for Mutilator 2, writer/director Buddy Cooper’s long-awaited follow-up to his 1984 slasher The Mutilator (pick up a copy Here), and you can check it out in the embed above! It was previously announced that The Mutilator cast members Ruth Martinez and Bill Hitchcock would be returning for Mutilator 2, despite the fact that Hitchcock’s character died in the first movie, and now the trailer has revealed how that’s possible: this sequel is taking a meta approach! Much like New Nightmare or the Town That Dreaded Sundown update, Mutilator 2 is set in a world where the first film was just a movie. But now someone is bringing the slashing of The Mutilator to life.
The original The Mutilator (a.k.a. Fall Break) had the following synopsis:
Years after the accidental death of his wife, a deranged man starts to slice and dice his son...

Thirty-eight years after gifting the world a really cool slasher called The Mutilator (pick up a copy Here), writer/director Buddy Cooper has finally gotten around to making a sequel to the film… and over the weekend, he took to social media to unveil the first official poster for Mutilator 2! You can take a look at the poster at the bottom of this article.
Cooper notes that “the woman bound to the nasty looking piling” on the Mutilator 2 poster is Olivia, played by Eva Hamilton of Death Kiss. Producer Jeff Seemann added that “the ocean water was in the 40s when Eva stepped into it for this scene.” So it definitely sounds like it’s a moment worth promoting on the poster.

Extreme haunts aren’t for the faint of heart. Over the years, these gonzo attractions have developed a reputation for roughing up their brave visitors and subjecting them to disgusting and depraved acts. From eating cockroaches to being nailed shut in a coffin, guests are practically tortured before they can exit. Yet despite their notorious practices, an extreme haunt obviously isn’t going to kill anyone, no matter how real or dangerous everything might seem, or how far they go with a scenario. That’s of course where horror movies take over; they defy reality and fulfill the audience’s expectations. And like those that came before it, Haunt wants to make sure its patrons have a hell of a story to tell — so long as they can make it out alive.

Only eight years have gone by since the release of director Anthony Diblasi’s well-received horror feature Last Shift – but the filmmaker has already decided to return to the concept for an “expanded reimagining” that recently wrapped production. Jessica Sula (Split) stars in the currently untitled reimagining, which is coming to us from Welcome Villain Films. This is the company’s first feature.
The Last Shift reimagining centers on
a rookie police officer (Sula) who willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station in an attempt to uncover the mysterious connection between her father’s death and a vicious cult. Throughout the night, she finds herself barraged by terrifying supernatural events while unveiling the truth behind her family’s twisted past. This reimagining takes the premise of the 2014 festival hit and flips it on its head, thrusting viewers into a relentless, adrenaline-fueled, bloody cult nightmare.

Earlier this year, brand new production and distribution company Welcome Villain Films launched with “an expanded reimagining” of 2014’s Last Shift in the works. Today, Last Shift announced its lead and a tease of what to expect.
Split actress Jessica Sula (“Scream: The TV Series”) will star in director Anthony Diblasi’s reimagining of his 2014 chiller.
Sula will play “a rookie police officer (Sula) who willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station. She hopes to uncover the mysterious connection between her father’s death and a vicious cult, but throughout the night she’s thwarted by terrifying supernatural events that connect to her family’s twisted past.”
The untitled reboot has wrapped production, with post-production expected to finish this fall for a planned 2023 release.
Diblasi co-wrote the upcoming film with Scott Poiley, and it sounds like it will be a much bigger, bloodier affair.

Six friends start a business providing guided tours to the shooting locations of the world’s most famous horror films, until they discover the one spot where the terror is real.
The saddest thing about Jeff Seemann‘s Terror Trips is that it’s easy to tell it was entirely made from a place of love for the horror genre. There is so much heart, soul, passion, and care injected into the film to the point where it’s legitimately upsetting knowing what unfolds throughout the course of the movie.
Long story short, Terror Trips is one of the most boring and uneventful horror films of the year. It runs at an extremely brisk eighty-seven minutes including credits, and yet so much of the film focuses on this young group of friends...

The Wrong Turn franchise hasn’t ever been a well respected horror series, but it has shown itself to be pretty sustainable over the years, delivering a total of six films between 2003 and 2014. Now, the carnage will continue with yet another outing currently in production.
Yes, as you may’ve heard, Constantin Film – the studio behind the Resident Evil movies – is bringing us a new chapter in this series that revolves around an inbred family of cannibalistic mountain men from West Virginia. Mike P. Nelson, director of the acclaimed post-apocalyptic thriller The Domestics, will be behind the camera and in what may sound like a familiar premise, the movie will feature a group of friends who embark on a hiking trip through the Appalachian Trail.
It’s here that they come into contact with “The Foundation,” a community who’ve been residing in the mountains for many decades and these...

"Is this supposed to be scary?" Momentum Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie horror titled Haunt, a new haunted house horror co-directed by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods. This insanely freaky looking film is about a group of friends who encounter an "extreme" haunted house that promises to feed on their darkest fears. The night turns deadly as they come to the horrifying realization that some nightmares are real. Ohh yeah. They threw in every possible scary-as-f*!k idea into this and it looks excruciatingly horrifying. Katie Stevens stars, with Will Brittain, Lauryn Alisa McClain, Andrew Caldwell, Shazi Raja, Schuyler Helford, Phillip Johnson Richardson, Chaney Morrow. Looks way, way better than it should and I hope it's as terrifying as this trailer promises. Here's the first official trailer for Scott Beck & Bryan Woods' Haunt, direct from Momentum's YouTube: On Halloween, a group of friends encounter an...
