Now streaming on Disney+ is Safety, the real-life story of Clemson University football Safety Ray McElrathbey played by Jay Reeves who secretly smuggled his 11-year old brother Fahmarr portrayed by Thaddeus J. Mixson into the dorm rooms while playing college football at Clemson University. He was willing to choose his brother over his athletic career but the college community eventually rallied around him and his young brother. The cast and director Reginald Hudlin talked about the film over a Zoom conference. CineMovie had the opportunity to ask Jay and Ray about this endearing story.

The customary, adrenaline-juiced montage of football prep and clash comes fast, furious and surprisingly early in the football melodrama “Safety,” streaming on Disney Plus starting Dec. 11. There’s a reason for the hurry, hurry, hurry. Turns out, college ball isn’t the most important goal of this heart-tugger, directed by Reginald Hudlin and written by Nick Santora. At least, not in typical gridiron fashion. Not that the college team’s boosters will have cause to belly ache: The screen is awash with their beloved tiger mascot’s paw print and inundated with waves of Clemson orange.
Jay Reeves — in what should be a boost to his nascent career — appeals as the promising football frosh Ray McELrathBey. Anyone who’s played organized sports is familiar with their clichés. Whether “fighting in the trenches” as though a game is akin to war or loyalty and love transforming your teammates and coaches into a second family (the same rhetoric employers use as a means to get you to willingly sacrifice more than your compensation contractually demands), these platitudes are used to confirm that “we” is stronger than “I.” The result is two-fold: we do make priceless relationships from those experiences, but also sometimes find ourselves stripped of individual worth. So when a university like Clemson has a real-life story that can prove the former without a shadow of a doubt, you bet they’ll participate in bringing it to life … as long as the latter is edited out.
That’s the compromise you must make when tackling a subject such as the one at the center of Reginald Hudlin’s Safety.

Safety may not be a Christmas movie as such, but it’s a film made for all the family to enjoy – and what’s more, it’s full of hope and optimism, and what’s more Christmassy than that? The film is launching this weekend on Disney+ and to mark the occasion we took part in a mega virtual junket, where we spoke to leading stars Jay Reeves, Corinne Fox as well as Hunter Sansone and newcomer Thaddeus J. Mixon II. We even had the chance to speak to those behind the lens, chatting to director Reginald Hudlin, with producer Mark Ciardi and the real-life man this entire project was based on, Ray-Ray McElrathbey. Be sure to watch both interviews in their entirety below as we discuss the project at length, and even speak to director Hudlin about his time collaborating with the late, great actor Chadwick Boseman when they worked together on Marshall.

The Tax Collector, despite its title, is not a Hallmark channel drama about a lovelorn IRS agent, which the just-released trailer makes abundantly clear. Indeed, the film, an intense crime drama from Suicide Squad director David Ayer, is a Southern California-set tragedy with quite the ace in its hole with a maniacally unhinged performance by Shia Labeouf.
Ayer, best known for the aforementioned Dceu outing, along with Will-Smith-starring (and sequel-set) Netflix feature Bright and Brad Pitt-headlined WWII epic Fury, makes a thematic reprisal of sorts with written/directorial offering The Tax Collector, which returns him to the wheelhouse of his earlier urban-action efforts like Street Kings, End of the Watch and Sabotage. In this case, Ayer depicts the dilemma of a So-Cal man who, for the sake of his family, attempts to escape his gang’s reach; an endeavor that will put him in some serious cross-hairs.
