In the canon of unexpected streaming successes, Netflix‘s Baby Reindeer looms large as a particularly unlikely hit.
The seven-episode British series, created by and starring comedian Richard Gadd has taken the media world by storm. Per Netflix’s metrics, Baby Reindeer is on its way to becoming one of the most-watched shows in the streamer’s history. Audiences remain captivated by Gadd’s depiction of real life events – perhaps too captivated, as the internet continues its attempts to dox every actual person involved (Note: Stop doing that!)
Still, it’s not hard to see why Baby Reindeer has invoked such a passionate reaction in viewers. The story is an intensely personal one for Gadd and oftentimes, the more personal something is, the more universal its appeal becomes. Not everyone can directly relate to Gadd’s traumatic experience of being stalked, but everyone knows what pain, confusion, and fear looks like.

“To anyone who watched: thank you. To anyone who stopped me on the street to tell me how much time they had or how annoying their mom was: I love you,” said Sofia Black-d’Elia, star of Single Drunk Female after Freeform canceled the series.
The Disney-owned network axed the show after two seasons.
Black-d’Elia played 20-something alcoholic Samantha Fink, who, after a public flame-out at a New York media company, is forced to seize the only chance she has to sober up and avoid jail time: moving back home with her overbearing mother, Carol, played Ally Sheedy. Back in Greater Boston, Samantha sets out on a path to move past her worst self and figure out her best self. Kinda.
“I’m so sad the Sdf journey has been cut short. I’ve loved making this show. I’m grateful to everyone who was apart of it,” she added.

Freeform is shedding a pair of scripted originals.
The Disney-owned cable network has canceled sophomore comedy Single Drunk Female and rookie drama The Watchful Eye.
The news comes four months after Disney’s Dana Walden shuffled her executive ranks and gave oversight of Freeform to Simran Sethi, the ABC development executive who previously headed up originals for the younger-skewing broadcast network with former Freeform president Tara Duncan now exclusively focused on the Onyx Collective studio.
Single Drunk Female starredSofia Black-d’Elia, Ally Sheedy, Rebecca Henderson, Sasha Compere, Lily Mae Harrington and Garrick Bernard and hailed from creator Simone Finch (The Connors) and exec producer Jenni Konner (Girls). The show was produced in-house by Disney’s 20th Television, where Konner is based with an overall deal.

[This story contains major spoilers for Single Drunk Female season 2.]
In the second season of Single Drunk Female, creator Simone Finch wanted to expand beyond Sam’s (Sofia Black-d’Elia) journey with physical sobriety and explore what comes next: emotional sobriety. “We wanted to talk more about what happens when you’re sober and you think that you have everything figured out,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter.
The result is something equally as messy for Sam as season one, just in some compelling (and cringey) new ways. And as audiences see, her friends and family are not immune to season two’s mess. As a result, the return of Freeform’s breakout hit — which debuted on April 12 and is airing weekly on the cabler (though the entirety of the season is already available on Hulu) — watches more in its second go like an ensemble show, where more screen time translates to more complication but also more depth.

TV Fanatic talked to creator Simone Finch about how she used part of her recovery in sobriety to continue Sam's journey and how the road isn't easy.
Single Drunk Female Season 2 will also cover Sam's friends' addiction issues again. Check it out:
Hi Simone. I loved Single Drunk Female. I love that your own battle inspired it with sobriety. What do you think audiences connected with the most during Season 1?
It was authentic. They could feel that it was real. After seeing the show, my friends told me they didn't know it was that bad. These have been friends of mine for years but have only seen me sober.
It was the authenticity and that it came from a real place and that...

Alcoholism is a disease, and a comedy show dedicated to letting the viewers know, coupled with humor, that too much alcohol consumption could be harmful to the extent that it would affect not just them physically, but also the people around them. It is as difficult to get over alcohol dependency as it is to get out of drug addiction, or any kind of addiction for that matter. “Single Drunk Female” talks in detail about one character amongst many who are unfortunately addicted to alcohol and presents the story of a woman who is deep down in alcoholism and how she recovers and goes through her ups and downs repeatedly to be able to finally conquer this disease. Created by Simone Finch, the story is a tale of a young, educated, employed girl who goes from bad to worse when it comes to intake of alcohol and how she must...

One of last year's best shows returns this week — and it's possible you've never even heard of it.
Single Drunk Female, a Freeform comedy from Simone Finch, debuted to critical acclaim in January 2022, but it struggled to break into the cultural conversation over the course of its first season. Still, strong premiere ratings and next-day streaming earned the show a second season, and Finch hasn't wasted a minute of the opportunity. Single Drunk Female Season 2 (which premieres April 12 on Freeform and drops all at once on Hulu the following day) is an absolute triumph: The 10-episode season continues to find specific moments of humor in Sam's (Sofia Black-d'Elia) journey towards sobriety, all while expanding its scope to deepen the inner lives of the supporting characters in her orbit.

Freeform’s “Single Drunk Female” Season 2 trailer is here to show that Samantha Fink’s sober journey is only the starting point in her story.
The comedy series — set to return Wednesday, April 12, at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on Freeform, and releasing the full ten-episode second season on Hulu Thursday, April 13 — showed a glimpse of Sam (Sofia Black-d’Elia) working to become more self-sufficient after getting more comfortable in her sobriety.
The new trailer, debuting exclusively on TheWrap, finds Sam looking for apartments with her friend Felicia (Lily Mae Harrington) to move into now that she’s been sober for a year and a half.
“If last season was Sam having to deal with her worst self to become her best self, this year it’s ‘I did everything right! Why doesn’t my life work yet?!'” Daisy Gardner, showrunner, executive producer and writer said in a statement to TheWrap.

“I had an instinct for how to play this character, but I also knew that it would be really challenging,” shares Sofia Black-d’Elia about the role of Sam in Freeform’s “Single Drunk Female,” a comedy about a millennial’s journey with sobriety. Based in part on series creator Simone Finch’s own life, the show features a “really truthful, honest telling of a gal getting sober,” and the actress felt “the dialogue was very grounded.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for the “Single Drunk Female” Season 1 finale, including the ending.]
Over the course of the first season of “Single Drunk Female,” success comes in wildly different forms. Whether it’s the incremental steps that multiple characters take toward maintaining sobriety or learning how to say sorry, it’s sometimes hard for Sam (Sofia Black-d’Elia) to gauge how much she should actually celebrate.
After some early stumbles and a string of stressful moments that could have kept her from getting to that point, Sam finishes Season 1 with over a year of sobriety. That wasn’t necessarily part of series creator Simone Finch’s original plan. But in working with fellow executive producer Jenni Konner, Finch found a season-ending symmetry in the journeys of Sam and sobriety pal-turned-romantic interest James (Garrick Bernard).
“I wanted Sam to relapse, originally. But she was so right about that. That’s boring. What we did is way more interesting,...

Rising star Lily Mae Harrington portrays Felicia, who is Sam's fun drinking budding on Freeform's Single Drunk Female.
Throughout the series, we've seen there's more to Felicia. She's a hardworking single mom, and she's a true friend to Sam. They have a fun and realistic connection.
TV Fanatic chatted with Lily about Felicia and Sam's friendship, Brit and Felicia's rivalry, and shooting that hilarious scene at the playground.
Hi Lily. I love Felicia on Single Drunk Female. What is your favorite part about playing Felicia?
Well, there's incredible freedom. At first, we see her as the rebel friend with a drunk friend, and then it takes a turn into her being a successful adult, even though she's a single mom and is still drinking.
There's this freedom in saying whatever I want and playing with improv. It's the first time I've ever played a part where I've ever used improvisation at all.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Matthew McConaughey hasn’t exactly shut the door on appearing in the third installment of Channing Tatum’s stripper franchise “Magic Mike.” But the actor, who appeared in the 2012 original (but said no to 2015’s “Magic Mike Xxl”), is still waiting for his phone to ring about “Magic Mike’s Last Dance.” “Channing Tatum, call me, bro! I haven’t heard from ya!” the Oscar winner said when I recently asked him if he’ll be back in the role of strip club owner Dallas.
“I don’t know,” McConaughey said. “I’d have to read [the script] first. It was a helluva lot of fun doing the first one.” Tatum announced in November that “Last Dance,” directed by Steven Soderbergh, will be released on HBO Max. Shooting is set to begin next month in London and Italy.

Freeform’s comedy series Single Drunk Female got off a promising ratings start. The January 20 launch has amassed over 2.4 million multiplatform viewers in Live+7, according to Nielsen and Freeform, marking the network’s biggest comedy premiere since the Jan. 3, 2018 debut of grown-ish more than four years ago.
The opening episode also was the most-watched Freeform comedy series premiere on Hulu, and the second-best performance overall for a Freeform series premiere on the platform, behind only Cruel Summer, which averaged 3.81 million multi-platform viewers in its first week.
There is a caveat. Freeform has only launched one comedy series since grown-ish, Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, plus the pandemic-themed 2020 entry Love in the Time of Corona. Still, Single Drunk Female‘s performance is respectable for a comedy on basic cable which traditionally are hard to launch. It complements the show’s critical success with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Freeform’s new series “Single Drunk Female” does something impressive: Without leaning too hard on mordancy or gallows humor, it finds the funny in recovery.
Notionally, the process of getting sober is one of the more punishing things a person can do, requiring self-reflection and consideration of the ways one’s behavior has harmed others. There’s raw material in this for drama, perhaps, but comedy of anything but the most mordant kind seems something less than intuitive. Which makes the brightly upbeat but clear-eyed “Single Drunk Female” a welcome addition to the TV landscape.
Created by Simone Finch and executive produced by Jenni Konner, “Single Drunk Female” begins mid-rampage: Sofia Black-d’Elia’s Samantha is, for what we grasp is closer to the thousandth time than the first, on a bender and determined to take down anyone in her sights. For Simone Finch, the creator and executive producer behind Freeform’s upcoming Single Drunk Female, the comedy starring Sofia Black-d’Elia and Ally Sheedy comes from a deeply personal place.
During the show’s TCA panel on Wednesday Finch shared that Single Drunk Female first originated nearly a decade ago as she struggled with addiction after her father’s death.
“I started writing this in 2012 before I got sober and I got sober and I realized it was about a girl getting sober,” said Finch, who is now seven years and eight months sober, adding “I called it a living script as it sort of evolved as I got more sober.”
