Zee End Is Nigh
Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd., the disappointed bride in the failed engagement between Zee and Sony India, has formally ended its quest for a merger. On Tuesday, it withdrew its application before the industry regulator National Company Law Tribunal and said that it will focus instead on internal growth. Pulling the Nclt application also makes it somewhat easier for Zee to pursue its arbitration and other legal actions against Sony.
The plan to merge the two mid-size film and TV businesses was on the table for over two years, but finally (acrimoniously) collapsed in January 2024. Sony is also seeking restitution from Zee, which it says failed to live up to the agreed merger terms. Since the wedding bells stopped ringing, Zee has also announced that it will slice its workforce by 15%.

The feud between the Hindus and the Muslims in India has been one of the most serious issues the country faces, with the violence occasionally leading to riots that end up with numerous victims. Alok Kumar Dwiwedi directs a rather claustrophobic short that takes place inside a cramped house during one of those riots, in an effort to showcase the issue through a stageplay-like, genre approach.
Hurdang is screening at Osaka Asian Film Festival

Bollywood has found a safe haven on the streaming platforms and is hell bent upon exploring themes that were earlier either forbidden or had no takers. After the huge success of ‘Vicky Donor’, a film about sperm donation, a number of so-called taboo subjects have found their way into mainstream narratives. ‘Shubh Mangal Savdhan’ on erectile dysfunction, ‘Padman’ on menstrual hygiene and ‘Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’ on gender diversities, to name a few.
In the latest, ‘Chhatriwali’, the themes are male contraceptives and safe sex. No harm in dealing with a subject that may not be still discussed openly in families, although everyone seems to be aware of condoms in big and small towns alike.
Set in Karnal, Haryana, the film is about Sanya Dhingra (Rakul), an unemployed chemistry whiz, who is looking for a job and uses her skills to fight an important social taboo by taking sex education classes for young people.

On the afternoon of June 13, 1997, a fire caused by an improperly maintained transformer broke out in Delhi’s Uphaar Cinema, quietly fumigating an auditorium packed for a first-day screening of flagwaving blockbuster “Border” with carbon monoxide before plunging the room into darkness.
Those scrambling for the exits found multiple code violations standing between them and survival; the balcony doors had been padlocked from the outside to prevent late entry. 59 cinemagoers never saw the light again; over 100 were injured.
“It wasn’t a cinema hall, it was a crematorium,” notes one official in “Trial by Fire,” a necessarily sorrowful but forcefully compelling seven-part dramatization of the blaze and its aftermath, which represents one of Netflix India’s strongest miniseries to date.
At its centre are Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy (Rajshri Deshpande and Abhay Deol), a representative middle-class couple who are introduced as they wave their son Ujjwal (Abhishek Sharrma) and daughter...

Trial By Fire
Directed by Prashant Nair, Randeep Jha, Avani Nair
This is not a series. It is a piece of history regurgitated into a meticulously re-designed eyewitness account of what happened on 13 June 1997 when Delhi’s Uphaar cinema went up in flames extinguishing the joy and wellbeing of several families who lost their near and dear ones in the tragedy.
This series recreates the long and endless legal battle of a couple Shekhar and Neelam Krishnamoorthy who lost both children in the Uphaar cinema fire while watching J P Dutta’s Border.
The battle is long. But the couple’s patience, especially Neelam’s , is unlimited. This is the story of resilience determination and obstinacy , so real so tangible you can feel the pain of the couple every step along their painful battle. It won’t be wrong to say the couple fought their own war as fiercely as the soldiers seen in Border.

Trial by Fire is a Netflix miniseries directed by Prashant Nair and Randeep Jha starring Abhay Deol, Rajshri Deshpande and Ashish Vidyarthi. Based on a book by Shekhar Krishnamoorthy.
Trial by Fire is a traditional series in which some parents seek justice and try to find the guilty party to, in some way “return” their lost children.
A clear premise that because of its choice, leads us, undoubtedly, to a portrait about justice and a denouncement of its mechanisms, also political and social around red tape and organization of a country, India in this case, and its problems.
Valued fairly, this is a series which seeks the “denouncement” more than a cinematographic approach. Some characters that are “parents” like any other “parent” in a tragedy that has happened as a singular case but could be considered a generalized problem, systemic if you wish.
It is up to you to enter...

The makers of the upcoming film ‘Chhatriwali’ have unveiled the trailer, which focuses on safe sex and sex education among the youngsters, led by Rakul Preet Singh’s character.
The over two-minute long trailer begins with the stereotypes in the society surrounding sex and how women have to suffer because of a lack of education.
The trailer then focuses on a professor played by Rajesh Tailang thinking how it is not really important and is a taboo to teach children about sex and ‘copulation’.
Then enters Rakul, who gets married to Sumeet Vyas who doesn’t believe in using condoms.
Rakul said: “In today’s patriarchal society, every household needs a Sanya who holds the courage to single-handedly fight against all odds, traditions, social norms, and barriers. I hope this character inspires others to find their voice and speak up against unsafe sex and the many health implications of not using protection.

They brought along with them ample thrills, chills, and psychological intrigue. Here is our pick of the best, immersive entertainers from this lot.
The Fame Game
You may argue that the series that heralded Madhuri Dixit Nene in the Ott space frittered away its potential at the end but a second season may just redeem it. Yet, for the most part, this show was a perfect blend of drama, emotional heft, mystery, psychological layers, and histrionics with Dixit demonstrating why she is still considered one of the best actors to grace the silver screen. A moving performance by Manav Kaul, strong turns by Sanjay Kapoor, Suhasini Mulay,...

Delhi Crime 2
Starring Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal, Tillotama Shome, Aakash Dahiya, Adil Hussain, Rajesh Tailang, Denzil Smith, Yashaswini Dayama

When I first saw the second season of Delhi Crime my initial reaction was relief. Thank God, the second season turned out to be as gripping, if not more than the first season. Delhi Crime Season 2 follows those same characters – Shefali Shah’s Dcp Vartika Chaturvedi, younger cop Neeti Singh (Rasika Dugal) and right-hand man Bhupendra Singh (Rajesh Tailang) – as they tackle a series of brutal murders of senior citizens in the middle-class neighbourhoods of South Delhi.
With US-based indie filmmaker Tanuj Chopra on board as showrunner and director, working with a team of Indian writers, the series is loosely based on the Kacha-Baniyan gang murders in North India in the 1990s, but is not an exact replica of a particular crime as with the first series.

Khuda Haafiz Chapter 2: Agni Pariksha
Starring Vidyut Jammwal and Shivaleeka Oberoi
Written & Directed by Faruk Kabir
Reading some of the arrogantly dismissive reviews of this slick spin on the vendetta genre, I was convinced, more than ever, that nowadays the selfcrowned critics of filmistan review the directors and actors , and not the end-product.
Faruk Kabir’s Khuda Haafiz in 2020 was an extremely mundane fare, at best a timepasser during a desperate lockdown evening.
The second chapter in the Khuda Haafiz series is a far more laudable endeavour. It is a tautly told tightly edited(Sandeep Francis) thriller about child rape. Writer-director Faruk Kabir grinds his boots into the vile act with a persuasive force. The action is never gratuitous, but extremely wrathful and brutal.
There is a moment when the protagonist Sameer(Jammwal) gets to know the 12-13 year old boy standing sobbing in from of him had raped his 5-year old daughter.
