Exclusive: Following a competitive bidding war, Warner Bros TV has landed the Mac Smullen spec pilot Souvenir, Alaska. Carly Wray will exec produce and oversee development, while Lee Toland Krieger will exec produce and direct the pilot. Wbtv, where both have overall deals, had no comment on the project.
Sources say four other networks were chasing the pilot before Wbtv put in the winning bid. While plot details are being kept under wraps, sources close to the pilot describe it as a cross between a Stephen King and Michael Crichton story.
Wray has become one of the more seasoned producers in television working on such shows as Westworld, The Leftovers and Watchmen, for which she won an Emmy. She is repped by WME and Grandview.
Krieger’s past credits include You, Shadow and Bone and Superman & Louis. He is repped by WME and Anonymous Content.

Rosario Dawson is willing to risk anything to find her son in the first trailer for HBO Max’s “Dmz.”
The four-part limited series, based on the DC graphic novel of the same name, tells the story of a near future where America is embroiled in a bitter civil war, leaving Manhattan a demilitarized zone — hence the title of the series. The show chronicles the journey of fierce medic Alma Ortega (Dawson), who saves lives while desperately searching for her lost son.
In the trailer released on Monday — which you can watch above — Dawson’s Alma explains that she and her son were split apart during the evacuation out of Manhattan before it became a demilitarized zone. Even though the city is now an active war zone, she decides she must go back in search of him.
She contends with the gangs, militias, demagogues and warlords that control this lawless no man’s land,...

Exclusive: Carly Wray, whose credits include Watchmen and Westworld, has closed an exclusive multi-year overall deal with Warner Bros Television.
Deadline understands that the deal is in the high seven figures across three years. Warner Bros beat out a number of other suitors for the agreement, which is understood to have closed just before the studio shut down production in March.
It comes as Wray’s previous overall deal with HBO expired at the end of last year. The new agreement will allow Wray to develop, write and produce for the premium cable network but will also broaden out the opportunities to include streaming service HBO Max as well as third-party networks and digital platforms.
Most recently, Wray worked on Westworld, the sci-fi drama from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, and Damon Lindelof’s adaptation of Watchmen, which she was also a co-exec producer.

The WGA Awards boosted a pair of movie screenplays into Oscar frontrunner status on Saturday night, handing its marquee Original Screenplay award to Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won for Neon’s Parasite, and its Adapted Screenplay award to Taika Wiatiti for Searchlight’s Jojo Rabbit. Both of the winning scripts are nominated for Oscars on February 9.
This year the guild wasted no time in its 72nd edition, awarding its marquee prizes early in the night in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York. Many of the film-side nominees gathered in the Edison Ballroom in NYC, so as to make the shorter jump to the BAFTAs which are Sunday in London.

The Writers Guild of America revealed its winners for the 72nd annual edition of its awards, which were held simultaneously at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and at the Edison Ballroom in New York City on February 1. About 15,000 WGA members vote on the best writing of the prior calendar year in an array of genres.
But beware Oscar predictors: Often a few film scripts nominated for an Academy Award are deemed ineligible. Only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for the WGA Awards. That accounts for its relatively low success rate at previewing the eventual Oscar nominees compared to the other guilds.

Well, she may have been talking to Sister Night (Regina King) at the time, but I believe after sitting down with “Mirror Guy” aka Looking Glass aka Wade Tillman (played by the excellent Tim Blake Nelson), he’d be her first case study toward proving that theory true. In a dense hour devoted to the root of Wade’s pain, veteran “Leftovers” scribes Damon Lindelof and Carly Wray guide the audience through a troubling series of revelations, all centered around Wade, yet consequential for everyone in the “Watchmen” universe.
Given that’s the design behind every “Leftovers” episode — using individual trauma to reflect universal concerns — it should come as no surprise that Episode 5 is deeply sad, difficult, and exceptional. Even by “Watchmen’s” lofty standards,...

Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman has confirmed that his spinoff is not moving forward at HBO.
You know what they say about the game of thrones: you win or you die. Well, one of the many Game of Thrones spinoffs in development just died.
It was previously confirmed that Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman was working on the fifth of five announced spinoff pilots for HBO alongside George R.R. Martin. Now in an interview with Variety about last Sunday's episode, Cogman has revealed that the project is no more.
“This is it for me in terms of Westeros,” Cogman said. “It’s been a beautifully cathartic thing re-watching the series recently, it’s been ten years of my life.”
Cogman is credited as the writer on nine Game of Thrones episodes, dating all the way back to season 1's "Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things." Sunday's episode,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not keep reading unless you’ve seen “Game of Thrones” Season 8 Episode 2, titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.”
Veteran “Game of Thrones” writer Bryan Cogman has confirmed that his potential spinoff series from the HBO epic will not be going ahead.
“This is it for me in terms of Westeros,” Cogman told Variety. “It’s been a beautifully cathartic thing re-watching the series recently, it’s been ten years of my life.”
The most recent episode of the show, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” was Cogman’s last as a writer, and he says he “couldn’t think of a more beautiful episode to go out on.”
In the episode, Daenerys and Jon are interrupted in the middle of a rather important conversation. Jon had just told her that his real name is in fact Aegon Targaryen, and that therefore he is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne and,...

Margot Robbie is teaming up with producer Dan Lin to develop a feature film adaptation of the gritty crime novel Barbed Wire Heart, which was written by Tess Sharpe.
The project is set up at Warner Bros. and the studio has hired Westworld and Mad Men writer Carly Wray to write the script. Robbie is not expected to star in the film, but it sounds like the lead role would be a good one for her to take on.
The story centers on a character named Harley McKenna, “the daughter of a hard-edged, drug-running, meth-dealing killer who’s been trained for the family business since she was 16. When a rival family, who is also responsible for her mother’s death, makes a bloody push into her poor rural community, McKenna has to find a way to stand up to both her violent father and her mother’s killers without jeopardizing...

Details of the in-the-works “Game of Thrones” prequel series are still scarce, but now the new show has a face to lead it. HBO announced on Tuesday that Naomi Watts will star in the pilot for the upcoming series.
Jane Goldman and original book series writer George R.R. Martin are the co-creators of this new series, which still does not have an official title. Watts will lead an ensemble cast for a story set multiple millenia before the events seen in the eight seasons of the HBO series. It’s the latest TV project for Watts, who will also be a part of Showtime’s upcoming limited series on the life and career of former Fox News head Roger Ailes.

The “Game of Thrones” prequel pilot is coming. And though HBO has been extremely tight-lipped about when it’s coming, TheWrap was able to pry just a little more information out of Casey Bloys, when speaking with him during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour Wednesday.
“Our hope is that it would shoot you know, first half of ’19,” the premium cable network’s programming boss told us. “I don’t know where the October came from,” he added, referencing rumors that the prequel pilot would go into production in Belfast this October, in a story first reported by the Belfast Telegraph in June. “I’m guessing maybe they wanted it to be? HBO won’t be moving forward on any other of its “Game of Thrones” spinoff scripts in development, at least for now. Programming president Casey Bloys told reporters on Wednesday that a pilot for the “Thrones” prequel from Jane Goldman is expected to shoot at the start of the year, “but there are no plans to make any others at this point.”
Bloys and HBO had put five different “Thrones” spinoff scripts into development, but he stopped short of saying that the other four were completely dead. But for now at least, there is no movement on those projects. “The reason we did multiple scripts, in the development process, [we knew] out of five we’d be lucky to get one we’re excited about,” he said.

Winter may be coming for “Game of Thrones” fans, but a thaw is on the horizon. Last week, HBO announced a pilot order for the first “Game of Thrones” spinoff, created and written by Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin. The project is still untitled, but Martin wrote on his personal website that if he had his druthers, it would be called “The Long Night.” Martin did not share many new details about the project, but he did offer an update on the other four prequels in development, one of which has apparently been shelved.
According to Martin:
“As for the other successor shows… if you have been following along, you know that we started with four, and eventually went to five. One of those has been shelved, I am given to understand, and of course Jane’s pilot is now moving to film. But that does not mean the others are dead.

At least one of the five “Game of Thrones” prequels put into development at HBO “has been shelved,” according to “A Song of Ice and Fire” author George R.R. Martin.

“Kiksuya” puts the spotlight on someone whose name you might not have even known until now: Akecheta, played by Zahn McClarnon, the incredible “Fargo” Season 2 alumnus who has been a fringe player until now.
