Apparently the 'x' is silent, which might be one of the few subtleties of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. Its biggest influence is the Showa era of Godzilla movies. If you know that as an Imperial dynasty rather than a convenient shorthand for kaiju movies then you may have different feelings about the film. The cultural changes of the reign of Showa (also called Hirohito) from 1926 to 1989 are more dramatic than the Odessa steps of Battleship Potemkin or their homage in The Untouchables that bracket the age. For many though it isn't about politics but Gamera, Ebirah, Hedorah, and more.
Some of those films are out and out nonsense, but that doesn't mean they're not enjoyable. Men in rubber suits being dragged by the tail, titles that would vex any typesetter. An earnestness that relies upon po- and straight- facedly reacting to fairies and feet so large...

As My So-Called Life nears its 30th anniversary, Executive Producer Ed Zwick took a walk down memory lane Saturday to remind folks about working on the before-its-time drama that starred Claire Danes.
In a long X thread, Zwick shared an “origin story” about how he was first drawn to the work of Winnie Holzman before he would end up co-EPing her script with longtime producing partner Marshall Herskovitz. Zwick chronicles his work on My So-Called Life, as well as thirtysomething, The Last Samurai and Glory in his upcoming book “Hits, Flops and Other Illusions,” out in February.
“Kristy McNichol played ‘Buddy,’ an adolescent girl on ABC-tv’s Family,” Zwick began. “I’d write surly teenage dialogue and get network notes on my scripts with the initials N.O.B. meaning “not our Buddy.” I vowed someday I’d get to portray real adolescence.”
“Marshall wrote a provocative pilot for Showtime called “Secret Seventeen” about unruly,...

The new film directed by Jules Katanyag, titled The Oskars Fantasy, is one of the most absurd movies I’ve seen recently. Starring Filipino actors Paolo Contis and Joross Gamboa, the film revolves around a movie crew that finds itself getting eaten alive by monsters from the netherworld. The plotline might sound like this is a horror film, but it’s an out-and-out absurd comedy. Two men team up together and try to make a film, hoping that it will win them an Academy Award. On the way, they encounter actual monsters that were supposed to have been generated by visual effects. Paolo Contis plays producer Bobby B, who quits his job working for a tycoon and dealing with his unbearable son. He finds an ally in Direk Dmz who brings a once-in-a-lifetime script to him. Fantasies take over, and they visit Dmz’s grandma’s village to start shooting,...

Tensions between Jackie/Becky and Darlene over the potential revival of the Lunch Box came to a boil in Tuesday’s brutally funny, Thanksgiving-themed Conners, triggering an act of violence not-so-subtly foreshadowed in the episode’s title, “Slappy Holidays.”
After getting coerced by guilt-trippers-for-hire Mark and Mary, Jackie and Becky reluctantly agree to hit pause on their feud with Darlene and attend Thanksgiving dinner at the main house. As if the chances for fireworks at the gathering were not already sky-high, Dan extends an invitation to gal-pal Louise (Katey Sagal), to which she playfully responds, “You want me at Thanksgiving…...
