There’s a reason we would never advise someone to audition for American Idol using one of the judges’ own songs — it doesn’t always end well.
But that didn’t stop 22-year-old Madaí Chakell from attempting to soar where so many others before her have stumbled, performing “I Kissed a Girl” in front of Katy Perry herself. And while it wasn’t a total crash-and-burn moment, Katy was visibly confused by what she heard.

And then there were five. Monday’s episode of The Voice pitted against one another the remaining members of Teams Niall Horan, John Legend and Reba McEntire. (See? Ya never should’ve dropped Rudi, Gwen Stefani!) And, as if to remind the contestants of the rewards Season 24’s winner will reap, Season 22 victor Bryce Leatherwood dropped by to give ’em “The Finger.”

The war between Israel and the militant group Hamas, now in its fifth week, has claimed thousands of lives and ignited a geopolitical firestorm. Amid this bloody chaos, another struggle has played out across the internet, with politicians, activists, influencers, and media outlets grappling for control of the narratives around the conflict. Bad actors have further muddied the waters with fake images and misinformation meant to advance their own agendas.

An Iranian protest song in response to the death of Mahsa Amini has received around 95,000 submissions for a new Grammy award.
A special category, titled “Best Song for Social Change” was created earlier this year by the Recording Academy to recognise songs with profound social influence and impact.
“Baraye” by 25-year-old Iranian musician, Shervin Hajipour, went viral following the death of 22-year-old Amini in Tehran, Iran on 16 September.
Amini – also known by her Kurdish name, Jina Amini – died after being detained by so-called “morality police” for allegedly not following the country’s strict dress code while visiting the capital city, with protests erupting worldwide in the aftermath.
“Baraye” was written in tribute to Amini, and has received more than 40 million listens across multiple social media platforms.

U2 have come out in support of the protesters in Iran by posting a message to their 2.8 million followers.
The band are showing solidarity with Iranians who have been protesting in response to the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, while she was in the custody of the country’s so-called “morality police”.
Amini was held by the country’s police for allegedly having a loose headscarf, or hijab. Police have denied mistreatment and say she died of a heart attack, but her family dispute this.
Demonstrations have taken place across Iran, including in the capital Tehran. According to officials, at least 41 people have died since protests began – but Iranian people say the number is much higher.
Now, the Dublin band have used their platform to show their support for those protesting by posting an image of Amini, accompanied with words by the ancient poet Saadi Shirazi.

Dave Grohl, Travis Barker, and Miley Cyrus were some of the artists who performed at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in Los Angeles on Tuesday 27 September.
The show, which was held at the Kia Forum, kickstarted with Grohl’s 16-year-old daughter Violet performing a rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” along with guitarist Alain Johannes.
After that, Foo Fighters took over the stage, announcing: “Welcome to the Los Angeles Taylor Hawkins tribute concert.
“This is the hometown s***, so you gotta make it loud for Taylor.”
Grohl said that the idea of the concert is to “spend some time in [Hawkins’s] musical mind, which could be a pretty terrifying place” and to “celebrate this person that has touched our lives.”
The show continued with performances by Joan Jett, Chevy Metal, Kesha, Coattail Riders, Mark King, Rufus Taylor, Joe Walsh and the James Gang, Cyrus, Mötley Crüe, and Def Leppard among others.

Nicki Minaj has lashed out at YouTube after it issued an age restriction on her latest music video upload of “Likkle Miss Remix”, featuring Skeng.
On Monday (26 September), in a since-deleted Instagram post, the “Super Bass” star shared a screenshot of a letter from the platform informing her that her video “may not be suitable for viewers under the age of 18” per its community guidelines, and had subsequently been age-restricted.
“Imagine this. They restricted my f***ing video but have things a million f***ing times worse on their Bogus F***Ing Platform,” Minaj wrote in the caption.
“This is what they do to keep you from winning while doing ads for other people and posting Fake Fkng Stats. Because the same people who run YouTube are in bed with a certain record label and management company.”
The video includes a group of people twerking and dancing around Skeng and Minaj while they sing.

Tom Odell’s 2013 single “Another Love” is now at number 17 in the UK’s Official Charts after gaining popularity on TikTok.
The song started trending after a section of the track was repeatedly used to accompany a range of protest videos.
The clip of the song being used is a soundbite filmed at an Odell gig where the crowd can be heard singing the words: “And if somebody hurts you, I wanna fight/ But my hands been broken one too many times/ So I’ll use my voice, I’ll be so f*cking rude/ Words they always win, but I know I’ll lose.”
Now, Iranian women have been using the clip to soundtrack their protest videos in response to the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while she was in custody of the “morality police”.

Ahead of his debut album and signature festival, Kygo has released another taste of what the Cloud Nine LP has in store.
Constructed around an evocative chorus, the track’s thickened ambiance calls to mind imagery of an abandoned cathedral, and there’s a dampness in the space between frequencies. Percussion is uncharacteristically cold against the track’s high reverb atmosphere, and there’s even a bit of pizzicato to complement James Vincent McMorrow’s scampering vocals.
Most notably, however, is the absence of Kygo’s trademark tropical modulations. It’s quite apparent that “I’m In Love” is drawn from a much deeper well than previous singles, and we’re frothing at what else the 24-year-old Norwegian has prepared for the album.

It seems like Kygo is just full of new music these days, and why wouldn’t he be? As one of Edm’s fastest rising stars, all eyes are on the Norwegian producer to see what he’ll do next. And if his recent live performances are any indication of what’s to come, we’re going to be seeing a lot of original releases from him over the next few months.
After showing off one of his new tracks at Ultra in March, and giving some lucky fans at Coachella a copy of his Dillon Francis collaboration, “Coming Over,” the 23-year old has now dropped another new song. Yet again choosing his Coachella debut to premiere new music (although this time it was weekend 2, not weekend 1), Kygo played out his next single, “Fiction,” which features Tom Odell on vocals.
Of course, not being an official version, the audio here is pretty terrible.

Monty has so far proven to be a sweetheart, whose only desire is to find love this Christmas.

John Lewis gives us Monty the penguin: We round up the Twitter response
John Lewis Christmas advert: Why we love (and hate) Monty the penguin
A parody video of this year's John Lewis Christmas advert shows the penguin in a more sinister light.
The sound of 'Real Love' performed by Tom Odell is replaced with sound clips from The Babadook, portraying Monty as a threat to Sam, the young boy featured in the advert.
This isn't the first parody of Monty - last week we saw him end with a deliciously cruel twist, which is equally as funny.

If you want a little something to pull on your heart strings, here's an incredibly touching Christmas ad about a boy, his penguin friend, and the magic of love. This thing seriously made me swell with happiness, and I'm so happy right now it's ridiculous! It also features a beautiful cover of The Beatles' song, "Real Love," which was performed by Tom Odell.
The ad is for the UK department store chain John Lewis, and the penguin character in the video is named Monty. The store has released a children’s book and an app for iOS and Android that are set in Monty's world. Enjoy the video, and I hope it brings a little happiness into your day as well.

Yes, "If I Stay" is yet another teen romance based on a young adult book. I will disclose that I read and loved Gayle Forman's best-selling book about a brilliant young cellist faced with the ultimate life-and-death decision after her entire family is involved in a devastating car accident. Mia Hall (Chloe Moretz in her first romantic lead role) is an invisible spirit watching over her unconscious body in an intensive care unit. As she ponders what the future holds for her (is she headed for Juilliard, as she once hoped, or should she just give in to the lure of letting go), Mia spends most of her time remembering what she loved most about her pre-crash life: her family, her best friend, and her rather amazing boyfriend Adam (Jamie Blackley).

In case you missed yesterday's Brit Awards (which is likely, as it was only live-streamed in the U.S.), there were several performances of note. There were also plenty of artists you've probably never heard of (John Newman, Chloe Howl, Ella Eyre, Tom Odell, Jake Bugg, Rudimental — look them up!), and so many moments that will make you realize that, yes, England does have slightly better music taste than us. If you missed any of it, we can tell you that (1) Beyoncé was there; and (2) Brits also adore Pharrell. Here were the best moments.I won't bury the lede: Here's Beyoncé's performance of "Xo," her newest single (once "Drunk in Love" ends its radio reign.) She swayed to the downbeat track in a shiny dress. Start praying now that this song eventually gets some signature choreography. Katy Perry did her "Dark Horse" thing — but this time it wasn't witchy, it...
